Acne Vulgaris is one of the most common and recognized skin diseases. This disease is mostly found in young adults, but can occur throughout all age groups. It can also manifest anywhere on the skin taking different forms. Its unfavorable appearance can lead to self-esteem issues in all who are affected. This can also play a burden on economic issues in attempts to solve the problem. Everyday lives for those with the disease can be a struggle. Many factors come into play when speaking of the causes of acne. These factors include age, lifestyle, skin-type, as well as others. For those who struggle the most these imperfections, emotional distress or even financial losses can occur (EpiCast Report). Jack Compton, a 20-year-old male, said he had a minor case of the disease when he was 15-17 years old. Around this time he also noticed other changes within his body, such as oily skin, due to puberty. Even with his minor case he still admitted to “feeling uncomfortable” and that he felt brought down by his appearance. Unfortunately, more severe cases could even lead one to become depressed and even suicidal. Compton states that he did purchase a over-the-counter medication to help with his acne. Luckily for him, this medicine did help clear with complexion. For others, finding a perfect match for all of the medications offered is like finding a needle in a haystack. This depends on the severity of the disease. Less severe cases can be solved by OTC medications that work to decrease oil production or break down the bacteria inside of the skin pores. More severe cases can be solved by prescription medications, which have the same goals as the OTC medicines but also work to slow down or diminish the growth of bacteria. Some procedures may include the removal of blackheads, injections to lessen the bump on the epidermis, and even surgery for those with acne scars
