To me, the three most important things for a student to be academically successful are participation, comprehension, and application. A student must be an active participant in their tutoring sessions. This means being focused, asking questions, and demonstrating a willingness to learn. A tutor's role in a student's academic success is to assist the student in comprehending the material in question during a session. Tutors should work hard to make sure they understand the material, so they can effectively teach and explain concepts to students during sessions. When a tutor is able to help a student comprehend a topic, a student can then move on to applying their new knowledge during class. A tutor should listen to the students and make sure they understand what topics are being asked about. Tutors should be able to explain concepts in a fresh and exciting manner, in order to raise a student's level of engagement in the subject. Fostering a positive learning environment should be the goal of a tutor every time a session is scheduled. This means making sure every question has a correct answer, and making sure the students come away with a better understanding of the subject material than they came in with. If a tutor is running a group session, they should seek to help students learn from each other as well. Sometimes, one student may have the answer to the question of another student, so promoting an open and collaborative environment should be another goal for tutors. Peer tutors are put in leadership positions that oftentimes prepares them for life after their educational experience. Additionally, peer tutors lead their tutees to utilize cognitive thinking skills. Finally, peer tutors assist tutees in development (pg. 4). Lipsky cited Arthur Chickering’s seven vectors of development (pg. 4). Each vector highlights areas of effective social, intellectual or personal development (pg. 4-5). She stated, “As a framework explaining college students’ evolving behaviors and attitudes, Chickering’s model is useful in your peer educator role. Note that the seven vectors overlap and are not linear in nature” (pg. 4).
Doing that involves an increasing mastery of skills, knowledge, and ideas." (Robinson, p. 119) The mentioned idea can be used to motivate students to participate in the learning process. The same way young children learn playing with others, the older child can do it experimenting and prove their theories. Teachers should try to make the class as interesting as possible. If the students are interested in learning they will try harder and learn better. Teachers should be a positive influence on their student’s lives. They should not only teach them the basic subjects, but also try to make them become better people by being involved with them. Some parents don’t care how their children act and don’t try to help them overcome problems such as shyness; therefore it is left up to the teacher to help these students. This is where the teacher should become a friend and role model for the students.

Tolerance and patience are among my many qualities, which can help me deal with kids when they fail to understand a concept. In addition, I am kind and understanding towards other kids. By containing these qualities, the students would actually look forward to learning new things. Furthermore, I am an extremely encouraging tutor. Being encouraging is the most important quality that a tutor should possess. If a tutor is encouraging, the student will develop a motivation to succeed, and a tutor’s joy is to see their tutee prevail. A student can learn memorize anything that a teacher lectures on. But the information is only stored temporally. If you make it fun and exciting the student not only learns but the memory lasts a life time.
It was stated in the article that a lot of the students’ vocabulary who lived in poverty in the urban areas was significantly lower than students who came from middle class families. It was also stated that poor families lacked language and verbal skills than those who came from middle class families. There were eight features that were evaluated when looking at students who struggled with language and verbal skills. Some of them include expectations that were challenging, involvement, and success. It seemed as they being socially accepted helped these students succeed as well.
Teaching means more than just giving students information about a subject. Teaching is about building relationships, and finding ways to support students in their pursuit of learning. Support can be both in the classroom (or the setting where the learning takes place), and outside of this realm. I have gained skills pertinent to support and relationship building throughout my experiences as a resident assistant, peer advisor and peer tutor. Being a resident assistant has meant that I have to open my doors and my life, in a vulnerable sense, to support those around me.
One of the benefits of peer tutoring is that it increases communication and social skills. The tutee will feel more comfortable learning, listening, and interchanging knowledge with a peer. Working with peers can also feel easier because they will most likely understand the position they are in at school and home. Education is a very important aspect of our lives. It is our education that makes us who we are and determines what we become. Therefore, education is not something to be taken lightly. As a teacher, my goal will be to provide the best possible education for my students. Every student is unique. I must see students for who they are individually and respect their ideas and opinions. Each student has a different learning style. I must take this into consideration because I want to provide a constructive learning opportunity for every student.
