LENS AND ARTIFACT ESSAY Abraham Maslow once stated in his theory "when the need of personality is broken, it creates personality disorder". He meant that, when we are in a situation where we completely lose hope and unable to accomplish certain needs to survive, it causes one 's to move up and down on the ladder of his theory. Maslow began his theory during his studies on monkeys. Being a behavior scientist, he knew that these monkeys had a similar reacting to certain situations that cause them to lack in certain needs they try to accomplish for their survival. Everything is covered in ashes and it 's dark. The man and the boy suffer from exposure to cold and lack of food with less danger ahead. They begin their journey with few resources they have in a cart. During their journey, the man and the boy come across an abandon gas station that completely destroyed and empty. The man and the boy search through the gas station for any valuable item they could find. Through their search, the man finds oil to lighten their lamp for the night and they set back on the road. Very rarely does anyone meet all five needs. Per Videbeck, Maslow used a pyramid to arrange the needs. The first stage is biological and physiological needs: air, food, drink, shelter, warmth, the most basic needs. The second stage is, safety needs: protection from elements, security, and freedom of harm or threatened deprivation. The third stage is love and belonging needs: which include work, family, enduring intimacy, friendship, and acceptance. The fourth stage is esteem needs: self-esteem, achievement, status, self-respect and esteem from others. The fifth stage is self-actualizations: beauty, truth, justice, realizing personal potential, and seeking personal growth. When a person has a lower stage taken away the person will regress back to the bottom and have to start all over again. This means that until the need before it has been satisfied, the following need can not be met (Encyclopedia, 2000). For example, if someone is hungry they are not thinking too much about socializing. In the order from lowest to highest the needs are psychological, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization. The first three are classified as lower order needs and the last two are higher order (Hierarchy, 2000). Without meeting these needs workers are not going to be as productive as they could otherwise. The first three are considered to be essential to all humans at all times. The last two have been argued but are mostly considered to be very important as well.
Values are established through life experiences, and refer to goals that are important to the individual, and affect the decisions people make. Whereas, personality is the relativity of feelings, thoughts, and behavioral patterns that differentiates people. Personality also gives use an idea on how a person will act within different situations. Understanding individual’s personalities is useful for placing people within organizations.
