This report is based on a case study of a teenage girl called Abi as presented above. The report attempts to identify some of the challenges and needs that are faced by Abi and how these needs are interlinked. Using various social work approaches, the author discusses various approaches a practitioner might use to meet the identified needs for Abi. Abi is under-age and overworked physically and mentally. Abi has five siblings and it appears as if it is her responsibility to take her siblings to and from school. This responsibility seems to impact on how she is making choices about her future. She is worried if she gets a job, she will not be able to help her mother to take care of her siblings which may amplify the already existing family conflicts. Trevithick (2005) notes that a person centred approach is an effective social work approach that may inform a social work when working with Abi, this is by considering her feelings, her views, being genuine, showing her acceptance and respect in relation to the way she is making her choices. It is paramount for social worker to offer support to Abi from a person centred approach, this is by assessing Abi with a none directive stance while making sure that ‘thought’ and ‘feelings’ are not subjective. NICE (2011) has developed guidelines for risk assessment for those taking drugs and one of the key things is for the practitioner to be empathetic and develop interagency approach so that those affected can be referred to the right agency for support. A need assessment will help in identifying Abi’s needs while considering her feelings, wishes and views.
