Is the ACT test able to correctly determine a person’s intelligence based on their score? Most colleges believe that it does being that a student’s high ACT score greatly increases their possibility of being accepted into a certain college. While in fact, there is no evidence proving that the test actually deems intelligence. Although there is no evidence, it has been instilled in the minds of high school students that they must get a high ACT score to be successful in college. This is incredibly false. The world is full of extremely successful people that may have faired poorly on the test or didn't take it at all. Colleges should not base a student’s intelligence level off their ACT score due to course selection, test anxiety, and the question to time ratio on the test. A student can be extremely intelligence and excel on classwork and assignments that are given with time to complete them, but as soon as a test is placed in front of them and the clock begins to run all of their intelligence dissipates to nothing. They are unable to focus and can not perform to the best of their ability. Even after taking an ACT preparation course, Haley Jones, a freshman at Nebraska-Lincoln who suffers from test anxiety states, “The prep class wasn't enough because there was no information about test anxiety”(Traux). Although most people are generally nervous when they are about to take an exam, “test anxiety goes above and beyond basic nerves”(Lecocq). So if a person suffers from test anxiety they may never be able to truly display their intellectual ability. Afterall, test anxiety should be considered when colleges examine students and their test scores because they could pass up an incredible mind and student by simply looking at their ACT
