The two artworks I decided to discuss are A thousand peaks and myriad ravines by Wang Hui for the Chinese artwork and View of Kojima Bay by Ike Taiga as the Japanese artwork. Both these share a few similarities including the subject of the artwork being the landscape and naturalism. In A thousand peaks and myriad ravines by Wang Hui you can notice very clear detailing and lining from the top trees of the mountains to the very small fishers and scholars portrayed towards the bottom and center of the artwork. Primarily, this artwork emphasizes the detail. The portrait is mostly taken up by the mountains and that around it. The range of colors used in this hanging scroll consist of the grey scale and a golden bronze done with a very thin brush.
Thomas would be in the category of romantic art for the theme of his artwork. He has based it on the beauty of nature and the fact that most of his major works were done in the period that romanticism took place, most of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Thomas Moran had attended the Hudson Valley River School, where many landscape artists had attended, too. He painted the Hudson Valley with the attraction, beauty, and scenery of the valley.(www.ency). He also was attracted to the awesomely romantic images of American wilderness and the open west, where he did most of his paintings. (www.art) Thomas was fascinated with Yellowstone and wanting to be associated with it painted the wilderness and scenery of it. (Vol.15) With the paintings he had done of Yellowstone Congress was fascinated with them, that they bought The Chasm and The Grand Canon of the Yellowstone Thomas had painted.
Ulrich and Georg Znaeym have a quarrel about whether or not Georg is trespassing onto Ulrich’s land in Saki’s short story “The Interlopers.” (Saki) Ulrich von Gradwitz lives in the relatively, newly formed Carpathian Mountains. Mountains can be formed in five main ways, but they are mainly formed due to movement of the Earth’s crust or tectonic plates. Mountains have no direct definition, but they have some similar characteristics that bind them together. They are not the same because of different formations, rock compositions, or the environment in which the mountain is present. Some people never get satisfied with what they have. In the stories, "Amir", and, "Gold Mountain Poems", The life lesson is to be happy for what you have. In both stories the main characters are immigrants coming to America. In the story, Amir just moved here from India and is upset with the people. In the poem the speaker is taken to an immigrant island instead of being released to go live in America. In both stories they are grateful for what they have.
Katsushika Hokusai was a famous Japanese artist who produced many pieces of art. During his lifetime his fame was mostly in Japan because at that time Japan was fairly secluded from other areas of the world. He didn't gain the fame from the outside world until after his death. One of his most famous works is 36 views of Mount Fuji. Two of the views were called Great Wave off Kanagawa or also called The Great Wave and The Inlet of Nobuto. Giorgione "loved to paint landscapes." Especially in "The Adoration of the shepherds" you can see how much effort he invested in painting a detailed background in form of a piece of coast and part of a village. When isolated this part takes on a life of its own (If concentrating you can see tiny details such as two persons standing at the edge of the coast.
An artwork will consist of different elements that artists bring together to create different forms of art from paintings, sculptures, movies and more. These elements make up what a viewer sees and to help them understand. In the painting Twilight in the Wilderness created by Frederic Edwin Church in 1860 on page 106, a landscape depicting a sun setting behind rows of mountains is seen. In this painting, Church used specific elements to draw the viewer’s attention directly to the middle of the painting that consisted of the sun. Church primarily uses contrast to attract attention, but it is the different aspects of contrast that he uses that makes the painting come together. The first artwork I chose for the formal analysis project is The Tiger by Ito Jakuchù originally painted in 1755. This painting is of a tiger licking its paw in the grass underneath a tree branch. There seems to be two diagonal planes as the tiger is leaning forward and sitting erect. There is a horizontal plane from what appear to be branches above the tiger. The painting has asymmetrical balance as the elements are equally distributed to balance the top and the bottom of the space. The artwork demonstrates several types of line. There are curved lines used in the tiger’s stripes. There are also diagonal, vertical and horizontal lines used in the background for the grass and the overhanging tree branch. The curved and wavy lines used in the tiger’s body, for example in the shoulder muscles, imply movement in addition to the curve in the tiger’s tail. The color scheme used in this painting seems to be complementary to one another as the artist used orange and brown tones with blue and red-orange accents for the tiger’s eyes and tongue. The print of art is a Hiroshige, Plum Garden at Kameido, 1857, woodblock print. The print shows a calm and peaceful color of a regular day. The background consists of wash colors like reddish-pink that fades into white, and transfers once more in a green hue of the greenish ground. The image is showing a view of a several plum trees, with the stems, the flower, and the people on the other side of the fence. This work has a light pink background symbolizing the sunset and warm colors of the spring. The middle ground in the light white color shows the piece where there are people on the other side of the fence and appears to be walking around the garden or going throughout their daily business. The middle ground also has a view of several plum trees, which all of them seem to be inside of the fence. The focal point of the piece is the main plum tree with its branches swinging from the left at a sharp angle and moving to the right.
Honestly, I was shocked by the story, but at the same time, I don’t know why I was shocked. The first detail that surprised me was how she described Swat. In the memoir, Malala describes Swat as the most beautiful place in the entire world. “My valley, the Swat Valley, is a heavenly kingdom of mountains, gushing waterfalls, and crystal-clear lakes…we have fields of wildflowers, orchards of delicious fruit, emerald mines and rivers full of trout.” (Yousafzai 15,16) I’ve always had this image in my head that the Middle East was this colossal wasteland and the fact that there are enthralling places with beautiful families shocked me. Although, I don’t know why I imagined it that way. I don’t know why I was shocked.

The second painting was by George W. Bellows and named Shoghead. This painting brought a sense of ease and relaxation. I can picture myself on the top of the mountain listening to the waves crash on the sides. The open countryside topped by the clouds give the painting a sense of realism. The extremely bright blue water stands out the most, though the focal point is not clear. There is not an excessive use of paint. It is as if Bellows caked it on his brush and made quick short strokes. The use of such dark colors on the hill is a mystery. The terrain has a roughness that makes the painting come to life. The artist did a great job of showing the depth. If I had to guess, he was influenced by Picasso’s work because of the extensive use of thick point.
The role of gardens play a much more important role in Japan than here in the United States. This is due primarily to the fact the Japanese garden embodies native values, cultural beliefs and religious principles. Perhaps this is why there is no one prototype for the Japanese garden, just as there is no one native philosophy or aesthetic. In this way, similar to other forms of Japanese art, landscape design is constantly evolving due to exposure to outside influences, mainly Chinese, that effect not only changing aesthetic tastes but also the values of patrons. In observing a Japanese garden, it is important to remember that the line between the garden and the landscape that surrounds it is not separate. Instead, the two are forever merged, serving as the total embodiment of the one another. Every aspect of the landscape is in itself a garden. Also when observing the garden, the visitor is not supposed to distinguish the garden from its architecture. Gardens in Japan incorporate both natural and artificial elements, therefor uniting nature and architecture into one entity. Japanese gardens also express the ultimate connection between humankind and nature, for these gardens are not only decorative, but are a clear expression of Japanese culture.
Another piece that sparked my interest is called The Courtesan (after Eisen). It is another oil painting and was done in 1887 in Paris. Again the subject matter is the reason I am writing about this piece. I had never seen any eastern style art done by Van Gogh. While viewing it in the museum that was my first impression. I then thought that possibly his expressive brush strokes could be seen as similar to that of Japanese calligraphy. I am not sure if there is a direct correlation between the two. I did however find out that the "after Eisen" in the title refers to the Japanese artist Kesai Eisen.
Jeremy Lipking’s painting of Silence and Sagebrush exhibits soft line work in the greenery as well as the mountains. Use of space in the painting is well balanced and the softness in the textures throughout give it emphasis.
I have figured out for myself that the world is more than just what you see, it's the meaning behind what you see that reveals the full picture. When I realized this, I started to explore outside my boundaries, and tried to decipher the meanings of other things I hadn't seen before. While I did this, I also tried to relate those things to my culture, and what I am familiar with. This is what I did with Japanese art. I figured out what each symbol in the pictures meant, then put all of those meanings together to understand the meaning of the artworks themselves. When I found the meanings of the art, I related it to the art in the United States. A Japanese portrait of a person is the same as an American portrait, except that the people used in the pictures are different. With chrysanthemums actually being the national flower of Japan, the cherry blossom is one of the main symbols that represents Japan. This is why a lot of Japanese paintings have cherry blossom trees in them. There are also a lot of architectural buildings within the paintings. This is the same with bold eagles (national bird) and roses (national flower), which both represent the United States. They can be found in many American
