A Sunday Afternoon on the Island La Grande Jatte created by Georges Pierre-Seurat is a frozen in action painting of a normal day of the wealthy Parisian life along the river Seine in Paris, France. Seurat designed this art piece in 1886 to show the wealthy Parisian life styles in a public park. Georges and his artwork were not well known until after he passed away. Seurat was very different from all the other famous artists in the 1880’s. His artwork, the technique he used and the reaction from the people differed from an artist like Camille Pissarro.
Georges Pierre-Seurat was born December 2, 1859 in Paris, France. He grew up with his brother, Emile, and his sister, Marie-Berthe. His mother, Ernestine (Faivre), came from a wealthy family while his father, Antoine-Chrysostome Seurat was a lawyer. Seurat began attending a local art school in 1875. He was taught by the sculptor Justin Lequien. From 1878 through 1879, Georges Seurat was enrolled at the famous Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Besides Lequien, “he studied under the artist Henri Lehmann as well” (A+E Networks). Seurat visited the Forth Impressionist Exhibition and was inspired by the Impressionist painters. “The little group of neo-impressionists was soon augmented by new adherents in France and also in Belgium where the exhibition of the Vingt had made the work of Seurat widely known among artists” (Questia). He was also fascinated by the science behind art. He also wanted to show off his talent and the technique he used which was very unusual. He used a technique known as pointillism, or divisionism. As you walk into the Los Angeles County Museum of Arts (LACMA), the sheer amount of paintings to view can be overwhelming but each is a masterpiece of its own as you pass by each art frame by frame from all different time. Francois Boucher, one of the greatest artist in the 18th century, was born in Paris, France on 1703 and later died on May 30th 1770. A painting that stands out is the Monument to Mignard, a painting Francois Boucher created around 1735 using oil on canvas with the dimensions of 28 ½ x 22 5/8 in. (72.39 x 57.47 cm). The Monument to Mignard has a lot of visual elements as you take a closer look and with imagination; people can conjure up the content of this masterpiece.
“A picture is a poem without words” – Horace, the purpose of art is to reveal the sensations of life but also allows humans to express their emotions and views on certain aspects. Jean-Michel Basquiat was a Neo-Expressionist painter throughout the 1980’s who was known for his style. He was African American artist and musician that was part of the SAMO. The SAMO was a graffiti group that wrote epigrams. While growing up, one of Basquiat inspirations that encouraged him to paint was his diverse cultural heritage. Basquiat was a creative self-taught artist who thought outside of the box when it came to painting. Most of the pieces he made were a collaboration of different ideas and constructed them together into a collage. During the 1980’s Basquiat’s art used the human figure to portray Minimalism and Conceptualism. His target market that were in many of his pieces was on suggestive dichotomies that focused on the lower class versus the higher class. Coming from a family greatly involved in art dealing, Vincent van Gogh was destined to have a place in the world of art. Van Gogh’s unique techniques and use of color, which clashed and differed greatly from the masters of the art world of his time, would eventually gain him the recognition as one of the founders of modern art. Van Gogh’s early life was heavily influenced by the role of his father who was a pastor and chose to follow in his footsteps. Although he abandoned the desire to become a pastor, van Gogh remained a spiritual being and was strong in faith. Plagued with a troubled mind and poor health, van Gogh’s life became filled with torment and isolation that would influence his career in later life as an artist. In his late twenties, van Gogh had decided that it was God’s divine plan for him to become a painter. His works would express through thoughtful composition and vibrant color, the emotions that he was unable to manifest in the real world. Van Gogh’s perception of reality and his technique would face harsh criticism and never receive full acceptance from his peers as a serious artist during his brief career. In a collection of correspondence entitled The Letters of a Post-Impressionist, Vincent confirmed these thoughts while writing to his brother Theo, “It irritates me to hear people say that I have no "technique." It is just possible that there is no trace of it, because I hold myself aloof from all painters” (27). His technique would later be marveled and revered by the art world. Georges Seurat used the pointillism approach and the use of color to make his painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, be as lifelike as possible. Seurat worked two years on this painting, preparing it woth at least twenty drawings and forty color sketched. In these preliminary drawings he analyzed, in detail every color relationship and every aspect of pictorial space. La Grande Jatte was like an experiment that involved perspective depth, the broad landscape planes of color and light, and the way shadows were used. Everything tends to come back to the surface of the picture, to emphasize and reiterate the two dimensional plane of which it was painted on. Also important worth mentioning is the way Seurat used and created the figures in the painting.
In the 1880’s the movement known as Impressionism was coming to an end. The eight and last Impressionist exhibition was held in Paris during 1886 (Time). Although Impressionism was coming to an end new forms of art arose to take its place. Some famous artists producing during this time include, Van Gogh, Georges Seurat, and Odilon Redon (Georges). Odilon Redon started his own movement known as Symbolism, which strives to give form to ideas and emotions (Odilon). Another painter responsible for creating a new style is Georges Seurat. Seurat was a French painter who popularized and developed his own style called pointillism.
A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, located in the Art Institute of Chicago, is one of the most recognizable paintings of the 19th century, a painting made by Frenchman Georges Seurat. Finished in 1886, it has gained much of its recognition over the time of its completion; the pop culture of today has played a pivotal role into the popularity of it. An example of that is being apart in one of the most recognizable scene in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, where one of the main characters is solely staring at the painting until he can’t even recognize the artwork. This painting also gets much attention because it was an early example of the style of pointillism, at the time; pointillism was becoming a new way of expressing one self with the new technique. It also brought upon about the way we saw paintings, and what we gained from the artwork as whole. In all this painting has become an icon in the art scene, due to the technique it used, and how much of an impact it has had in today culture.

A Bar at the Folies-Bergère was painted in 1882 and displayed at the Paris Salon; it is considered the last major piece of French painter Édouard Manet. It describes a act in the Folies Bergère nightclub in Paris. It originally belonged to the originator Emmanuel Chabrier, who was Manet's neighbor, and hung over his piano. In Manet’s painting, shows a young lady by the name of Suzon, who worked at the Folies-Bergère.
Le Grenouillere is a typical example of how much the style of painting had changed. The piece has been painted outdoors using light and bright colours, and is of a fairly ordinary everyday scene. It is a work in which we see his art losing the last of its stiffness and clean cut edge.

Henri Matisse was born December 31st, 1869 to two storeowners, Emile and Heloise Matisse. His father wanted him to be a lawyer, so later on in life he could takeover the family business. They sent him to Henri Martin Grammar School where he studied to be a lawyer. There was a hint of artist in Henri because while working as a lawyer’s assistant he took up a drawing course (Essers 7). It was for curtain design but it seemed to be destiny for a lawyer’s assistant to take up such a distant hobby as drawing.
