Parents go to great lengths to inculcate the importance of obeying household rules, moreover maintaining order in the home to their children. Parents plainly scare their kids straight with stories of monsters they have heard when they were children. An example of this would be a legend of “The Hand.” The story begins with a family with an incredibly strict father and a mischievous little boy. The young boy refuses to stop playing jokes and pranks on the family, in order to put an end to his shenanigans, the father chops off one of the boy’s hands. Years past and the family moves away. She began living without her parents early on in her life and today only sees her parents a few times a year. Despite being so far from her family Anabel feels close to her parents and brother by reminiscing on stories of when she was a young girl living in Spain. Stories she loves to tell are those of her and her older brother. Since he is eight years her senior, they did not spend much time together before he went off to college in the USA. The teller relates the story back to home in addition to her family. This story also has the purpose of teaching children the values of being a part of a family, how to treat family members, and respecting family members. Two of the punishments given to the little boys in the story vary on many levels. In the first punishment is physical while the second one, almost worse, is psychological. For the second punishment, the listeners do not know what happened to the little boy while he was away for what sounded like years. Ambiguity in the story leaves audience to fill in the blanks with their own imaginations. Children listening in may imagine up a punishment far worse than having a hand cut off by your
