William Faulkner was an American writer from Oxford, Mississippi who wrote many gothic stories including the one I will be talking about today called" A Rose for Emily". This story is one of the most popular ones written by him and its gothic nature intrigues his audience. In the story, a thirty-year-old woman named Emily hasn't married and in those times it was very unusual for a woman that old not to have a husband. So, Emily liked this guy named Homer Barron, but he didn't like her back which caused a severe grievance on Emily. In this essay, I will be focusing on the time period of which the story was written. After her father's death, the new south era occurred which was the time period after the civil war. This created the south to adopt more northern ways of living, but Emily wouldn't even pay her taxes to follow them.It says that in 1894 is when she refused to pay them so that gives the reader an idea of the time frame. This proves that Emily still honored her family's tradition of the old south. This explains the cultural diversity from the transition of the old south going into the new south and how it was hard for the people of the south to change. This transitioning period gives the reader a clue that this story took place during the period after the slaves were freed and the civil war. Faulkner's descriptions really explain when the story took place for instance when he talks about Emily's house he says, "it was a big squarish framed house that had once been white decorated with spires and scrolled balconies". This description really paints a picture of the decaying Mississippi town in the post-civil war south. The racist atmosphere of the town also gives a reader when the story took place because it talks about the black codes and how the blacks were technically free but under these laws, it didn't seem like
