A Reflection On The Movie Jesus Christ Superstar

I am writing my reflection paper over the movie Jesus Christ Superstar. The movie was not one that I would be dying to go see again, but it did have some good scenes and catchy songs. The movie did a pretty good job following the events that happened before Jesus’ death, but in my opinion failed when it came to depicting Jesus’ along with other characters’ personalities. The movie’s theological perspective on Jesus is different from what is usually portrayed in christian films. The movie uses Jesus in a low christology way in which he is more of a human figure than a divine figure. It focuses on Jesus having very human characteristics like anger, irritation, doubt, and fear, instead of focusing on more divine characteristics like his holiness

Just as John 15:5 states, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” We need to latch onto Him because without him we are nothing. He is so powerful and can handle all things. The Gospels portray Jesus as a selfless God who can take on anything and is always ready to help. He is a healer, a teacher, and a listener. He does not get overwhelmed as portrayed in the movie. Matthew 8 is filled with stories of Jesus healing others. Matthew 8:1 tells the story of when Jesus heals the leper. It says that “When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy.” Matthew 8:14 states that “When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. Yes it does follow some parts of the bible like the cleansing of the temple, Judas betraying God, Peter denying God, Judas hanging himself, and Jesus being crucified, but it varies greatly in terms of how the characters act.
