The key theme in “A Raisin in the Sun” is to keep dreaming for something better even when everything around you is deferring or destroying your dreams. Throughout the whole play we get to know the characters and their aspirations in life, and I’ll use their some of their cases to support my point. First, I want to talk about Beneatha. She dreams of becoming a doctor when, at that time women are just supposed to (as Walter says) “get married and be quiet . . .” but she does not let this stereotypes stop her. Even when her mother and Ruth talk about her getting married she says, “Oh, I probably will ... but first I'm going to be a doctor.” She is clearly determined to follow her dream despite the general ideas of what a woman should do with her life. However, after Walter’s mistake regarding the money, she tells Asagai that she has stopped caring about this dream of hers, but in the end, after talking with Asagai she sees the possibility of following her dream even without the insurance money, leaving with Asagai to Nigeria and working as a …show more content…

Since the beginning of the play we see him talking about investing the insurance money in the liquor business but everyone keeps bringing him back to reality and he complains saying, “Nobody in this house is ever going to understand me…” He dreams of making true this business idea and putting an end to his poverty with it. After Mama gives him some money for Beneatha’s tuitions and himself, he gives the money to Willy who, unexpectedly, runs away with all of it, just as Walter said, “Yessss! All of it ... It's all gone…” Because of this, Walter’s dream was deferred, and even when in the end he tries to get money accepting Mr. Lindner’s offer, he changes his mind and differs his own dream for his family’s sake and decides to move to the new house. By doing this, he’s making true his mother and wife’s dream of having a better place to live, despite the possible problems of discrimination they might
