She is selfless always trying to please others trying to make them happy and satisfied. Ruth’s and Mama’s dreams are similar. They both believe to build a happy family one needs to take a step towards his or her goal in a bigger and better home. When George Murchison arrives in the middle of Walter and Beneatha's frenzied African dance, Ruth is overly apologetic to George about their behavior. When Walter and Beneatha were arguing, Ruth asks Walter not to bring her into their conflict. And even though Ruth is annoyed by Lena's (Mama's) meddling, she still allows her mother-in-law to influence her at times about the correct way to raise Travis: “Turning and going to MAMA fast – the words pouring out with urgency and desperation, ‘I’ll work … I’ll work twenty hours a day in all the kitchens in Chicago… I’ll strap my baby on my back if I have to and scrub all the floors in America and wash all the sheets in America if I have to – but we got to MOVE!
