Touching, intriguing, depressing, these are all words that would describe the book A Prayer for Owen Meany. This story shows those characteristics by how showing how one’s life can change for better and worse, by having a good friend. One of the main characters in this book is a man by the name of John Wheelwright. John is led to religious faith by the life of his best friend Owen Meany. Owen believes in fate and he has visions of what the future holds.
In the beginning when John and Owen were eleven, they were both on the same baseball team. The one time Owen was allowed to bat he hit the ball and the ball hit John’s mother. She died that instant and then later Owen said, “GOD HAS TAKEN YOUR MOTHER. MY HANDS WERE THE INSTRUMENT. GOD HAS TAKEN MY HANDS. I AM GOD'S INSTRUMENT.” The meaning of this quote is that Owen looks at himself as the murderer of John’s mom. This hurts John knowing his best friend says he killed John’s mother. Also because John does not know who his father is and is now without parents. However John still remains friends with him. This is most likely because John does not believe that Owen is responsible for this tragedy.
Later that year at Christmastime Owen states, “I SAW MY NAME-ON THE GRAVE.”. John and Owen were in a production of A Christmas Carol. Owen was chosen as The Ghost of the Future. When he goes to show Mr. Scrooge his tombstone Owen sees his name on it. However he also sees a date on it which he will not tell anyone about when. As time went on Owen found out more about his death while dreaming. John is scared by this because Owen never let the idea that he will be dieing soon out of his head. Owen, from then on has John help him prepare for his death. Owen manages to convince John to practice a basketball move called “The Shot” which John does not understand why but, does anyway.
When John and Owen were older, they were playing in the academy when they saw a couple having sex. John looked away and Owen watched. Owen later said, “SEX MAKES PEOPLE CRAZY.” This had a deep effect on John because he remained a virgin his whole life. He says that the reason he’s a virgin is because of what has happened to him because of Owen.
Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving is a novel in which religion is of great importance. One of the main themes in this novel is faith in God and oneself, and even more, the conflict between belief and doubt. Irving writes in such a way, that this is very evident throughout the book. John Wheelwright, at the start of the novel, is a young boy who does not seem to know much about how strong his faith really is. Part of the reason for this, is that the choice between believing in and doubting God is that there isn’t any complete evidence that He even exists.
For example, he saw his name on Scrooge’s grave during the church’s Christmas pageant, which showed him the date when will die. Also, he spent many hours playing basketball, even though he was so small. While he didn’t know why basketball was so important to him, he worked hard with John to dunk the basketball. During the Vietnam War, Owen’s responsibility was to escort the bodies of dead servicemen back to their families. At the end of the novel, Owen had asked John to visit him in Arizona; when he knew that his death date was approaching. While escorting a group of Vietnamese children to the restroom, Dick Jarvis, who lost his brother in the war, tossed a grenade into the group. In order to save the children, John and Owen use the shot that they practiced so long on the basketball court to deflect the grenade. While Owen saves the children’s lives, he loses his arms in the explosion, which causes him to die: “Owen Meany’s arms were missing… Nowhere else was injured” (625). What was remarkable about his death was that only his arms were damaged. On Christmas Eve , Scrooge is gone by a progression of ghosts,starting with his old business accomplice, Jacob Marley. The three spirits follow,the Ghosts of Past , Christmas present and Christmas future ,show how his ,mean conduct has influenced everyone around him. Toward the finish of the story ,he is soothed to find that there is still time for him to change and we see him changed into a liberal and kind hearted person.
The book A Prayer for Owen Meany brings forth various themes and questions that can't be answered easily. One of these questions is "Can religious faith exist alongside doubt, or are the two mutually exclusive?" There are several different possible takes on this question may be answered. How a person answers this question is related to their belief in faith.
Since he prevented the Angel of Death in taking John’s mother’s soul, God appointed Owen to be the means in Ms. Wheelwright’s death and the foul ball during the baseball was more than merely a coincidence. After seeing this revelation, Irving depicts Owen’s notion of faith and how everything is pre-destined and fated to happen and that everything in this universe serves for a special purpose. Irving illustrates that Owen does not doubt about his faith whereas John Wheelwright is doubtful about his belief. John mentions that him and his family like Reverend Louis Merrill, who was a serious, doubtful, and intelligent person. However, Owen does not like him because Rev. Merrill is intelligent man with so much doubt in belief and according to Owen someone with this much intelligence should not have this much doubt. On the other hand, John and the Wheelwrights love Rev.
Similar to a prophet, Owen was given precognitive powers that allowed him to see into the future. Owen's first prophecy came to him on New Years Eve 1953 during the community production of 'A Christmas Carol'. The most obvious inference concerning the play was that Owen played the part of the ghost of Christmas yet to come. In reaction to Owen's portrayal of this character, the audience's faces which were "so amused, so curious, so various-were rendered shockingly similar; each face became the model of each other's fear" (42). Owen had dehumanized this character to the point that children were leaving the theater crying and some were even wetting their pants. One reference which could be made concerning Owen and Scrooge was that "GOD HAS ALLOWED [them] TO KNOW MORE THAN MOST PEOPLE KNOW-…" (366). Both of them were told their futures, however Scrooge made an effort to change his, where as Owen did not. Owen's revelation came through a vision he experienced during the graveyard scene of the play. He immediately fainted. The curtains went down, and members of the production all ran to Owen's aid, yet he seemed ungrateful, "He appeared to be sullenly embracing his 'vision' like the typically doubtless prophet he so often seemed to be…" (246). Owen believed he had seen his name on a gravestone along with the date of his death. No one could convince him otherwise. The fact that Owen was correct about the date of his death confirmed that he had visions; this proved he had qualities of a prophet.
The tone and allusions are important for John to portray how death is insignificant and irrelevant and that after death one moves on to a better place: heaven.
Although the narrator feels desperate, John tells her that there is “no reason” for how she feels, she must dismiss those “silly fantasies”(166). In other words, John treats her like a child and gives her reason to doubt herself. “Of course it is only nervousness”(162). She decides. She tries to rest, to do as she is told, like a child, but suffers because John does not believe that she is ill. This makes her feel inadequate and unsure of her own sanity.
John rather ties Owen in with something more personal and intimate, with his faith and religion. “I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice – not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother's death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany”(Irving 3). Although John states that Owen was involved in the death of his mother, John relates him to his personal beliefs. “For more than twenty years I’ve had to live with it, feeling the shame, trying to push it away, and so by this act of remembrance, by putting the facts, down on paper, I’m hoping to relieve at least some of the pressure on my dreams”(O’Brien 43). In John Irving's novel titled, A Prayer for Owen Meany, suspenseful events are of abundance, and there are multiple ways the author creates this suspense. Among these methods of creating suspense, four that stand out are the use of setting, the pace of the story, the involvement of mysteries to be solved, and the ability of the reader to easily identify and sympathize with the protagonist. By placing a character in a gloomy or solitary place, uncomfortable feelings are created, which append to the suspense. Pace and structure of the story also play into the foundation of suspense, as shorter sentences and stronger, more cutting verbs and adjectives are often used to keep the reader highly interested and reading at a rapid speed. Of course, suspense could not be considered what it is if there were no mystery involved. The element of not knowing what is in store for the future and having the urge to find out is the essence of suspense. Also, if the reader cannot easily relate to and sympathize with the character in the suspenseful situation, a loss of interest can arise, and therefore spoil the spirit of the tension. Uncomfortable settings, pace and structure, use of mysteries, and capability to relate to the main character are four techniques that John Irving uses to create suspense.

He knows there is no reason to suffer, and that satisfies him” (Gilman 115), and she shows her despise of her husband giving extra care to what he considers more important cases over his wife’s case with a sarcastic notion “I am glad my case is not serious!” (Gilman 115). It is very doubtful that John is the villain of the story, his good intentions towards doing everything practical and possible to help his wife gain her strength and wellbeing is clear throughout the story.
The morning after the accident in which Owen’s foul ball kills John’s mother, John wakes up to see the Mr. Meany’s truck outside on the driveway. Owen gets out from it and leaves a large package on the doorstep of the house. It contains all of Owen's baseball cards, his most prized possessions. John does not know what to do with those cards, and consults Dan Needham on the meaning of Owen’s action. When John sees his dad at the store, his internal conflict develops and this leads to his conflict with Grace. People in relationships tend to get into arguments with each other. It is a very realistic representation of his character. It would be unrealistic if a couple never argues. He accuses her of being a snob and this leads to the argument which is revealed when the narrator says, “They had never talked in this way, and now they were both quickly eager to hurt each other” (4). This illustrates that they were growing as a couple and were opening up to each other about their feelings. John finally lets his inner anger out on Grace and shows that he cares about her opinion on different matters such as how she views people from lower social class (3). John is a hypocrite since he calls Grace a snob when in reality he, himself is a snob because he is embarrassed of his dad’s lower social status. He is assuming that Grace would not like to be associated with him after finding out the truth. This is shown when he asks Grace, “You don 't like the kind of people you bump into here, … he asks recklessly, full of a savage eagerness to hurt her” (3). He is being naive for forcing his anger on Grace and not realizing the reason that is causing it.
