A Poem Analysis On Abortion

“Abortions will not let you forget. You remember the children you got that you did not get, The damp small pulps with a little or with no hair, The singers and workers that never handled air.” In these lines, the speaker seems very sad when she says that abortions will never allow you to forget children that you were so close to having, but really never got. She is very upset with the fact that these kids who could potentially be singers and workers never got the opportunity to breath air and actually be born. “I have heard in the voices of the wind the voices of my dim killed children. In the first two lines the mother is starting to realize how the children she never had never got to live or experience anything that she does. In the next three she states how much love she truly had for her unborn children. We know this by the amount of times she repeats the word “love.” She also shows how much she loves them by the way Brooks put “All” by itself, this shows that the mother loves everything about the children, their bodies and they life they potentially had. This poem helps show how Brooks writes with different characters/voices. Although she didn't blatantly come out and say she was against abortion, she shows how sad this topic could make a person who went through with it feel, even though Brooks didn’t experience it herself. In the next poem, A Sunset of the City, Brooks tells the story of a wife who is not really pleased with her life and doesn’t feel the true happiness she used to.
