The 1960’s was a time of great change and confusion.It was the era of backlash and rebellion. Women were now starting to acquire status in the work force. A time of new perspectives to be born. In A&P by john Updike, three girl’s change the behavior of a young cashier- sammy; on a hot summer day. The setting begins when three young girls walk into a local A&P supermarket wearing nothing but bathing suits. This is no average day for Sammy the cashier who has been working their for awhile. The three girls walk into the store with a sense of empowerment and status barely wearing any clothes . During this time women were starting to be considered equal to men. The first reaction as they walk in, is the stare of every male in sight. The girls pay no mind to the attention composing their sense of power over them. Just being a young cashier, Sammy continues to scan the customer’s items paying no mind except to the girls. Sexuality gives the power to the girls knowing every guy is in awe. This sparks a fire in Sammy’s behavior by accidentally scanning an item twice.”I ring it up again and the customer starts giving me hell.”(Updike,1). …show more content…

Sammy divides up the various people he comes into contact with into socioeconomic classes. Being that it is not an average day Sammy immediately starts thinking about the girls class bracket. These girls must be in a high class category considering they are lounging by the pool or beach instead working like Sammy on a Thursday afternoon. With no pockets, Sammy wonders how they are going to pay if they think they have to pay at all. “Now her hands are empty…. And i wonder where the money’s coming from.” (Updike,3).
