Registered nurses get the opportunity to save lives and make a difference in the lives of others. The nature of a nursing career is appealing, because it is ever-changing. As technology advances, so does the field of nursing; therefore, there is a lifetime of learning and gaining new skills. Nursing is an intensive program. It takes a minimum of a two year associates degree to become an RN, also referred to as a Registered Nurse. Because I am someone who easily obtains boredom, this job field sparks my interest. This job position is needed in locations all around the world. To obtain a bachelor’s degree as a registered nurse takes four years. Over those four years, paying for college expenses can often become costly. However, the years of school gives reward nurses job security due to their high demand. There will be a variety of options and opportunities for employment, and nurses will not have to be in fear of finding a job or being laid off. As the Bureau of Labor Statistics states, “There were 2.7 million registered nurses employed in the U.S. in 2014. The national shortage of Registered Nurses (RNs) has helped generate formidable interest in the nursing profession among people entering the workforce and those pursuing a career change. According to a report issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service in 2002, the national population is continuing to grow and age and medical services continue to advance, so the need for nurses will continue to increase. They report from 2000 to 2020 the predicted shortage of nurses is expected to grow to 29 percent, compared to a 6 percent shortage in 2000. With the projected supply, demand, and shortage of registered nurses and nursing salaries ever-increasing, the nursing profession can offer countless opportunities. But first one must determine which educational path to pursue, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in nursing (ADN). Most will initially be educated at the associate degree level, even though the American Organization of Nursing Executives (AONE) has recommended a baccalaureate level as a minimal for entry-level nurses. With the expanding number of RN to BSN programs available there is always the option to further one’s education at a later date. The benefits for acquiring a BSN over an ADN include a better knowledge for evidence-based practice, an increased advantage for promotion, and the necessary gateway for higher education.
For my wikipedia project I talked about neonatal nursing which is what I would like to be when I graduate from college. I just feel as though nursing is important because nurses impact today's society. The reason nurses impact the society we live in, is because they provide their patients with a level of care that is different from any other profession. There is a shortage of all health care professions throughout the United States. One shortage in particular that society should be very concerned about is the shortage of Registered Nurses. After going through a lot of trial and error in my career, I have decided that I want to pursue being a Registered Nurse. Many things have led me to this career choice, including personal and financial gain. I have tried many other occupations and educational programs and none of them have fulfilled me like I believe nursing will. This paper serves to inform individuals about the benefits, challenges and education facing nurses. In the review of literature, one source is obtained from the SVSU database which describe the benefits of nursing; two additional SVSU database sources will also describe the challenges. In addition, a case study is evaluated, which shows the correlation between the career and the pass/failure of the NCLEX-RN exam. This paper concludes with an analysis of the information gathered, showing why nursing is a field that others should consider as a career.
The shortage of registered nurses (RNs) in the United States has been a cyclical topic dating back to the 1960s. Only recently have employers in certain regions of the nation stated a decline in the demand for RNs. Consequently, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2014) report on 2012-2013 Enrollment and Graduations in Baccalaureate and Graduate Programs in Nursing, American nursing schools denied admission to 79,659 qualified applicants from baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs in 2012. The reported decrease in job availability and rejected admissions has left many individuals to question if the nursing shortage still exists. On the other hand, some experts project that the United States will be short more than one million RNs by 2020 (Dolan, 2011). Although some parts of the country are in less of a demand than others, it is undeniable that there is a national shortage of RNs.
Many people have a difficult time making a career choice. Some people enjoy being outside working, while others love to be inside sitting behind a desk or behind a counter. One career that interests me the most is nursing. The particular field of nursing that I am interested in is a registered nurse. Becoming a registered nurse pays of because for all that hard work because a registered nurse has an annual salary of sixty-five thousand, four-hundred and seventy dollars, but to become is still a lot of hard work, not only is a bachelor’s or associates degree required but you also need a registered nurse license which also takes and extra two years, so it takes a long time to become a registered nurse, and I believe I am ready for the hard work that comes with being a registered nurse because of my job shadowing experience. My job shadowing experience was very beneficial to me as a potential job seeker. One reason why is because it made me want to be nurse more, it made me want to be a nurse more then I wanted ever before. To become a nurse is a different story but there is also many steps I can take during and have taken in my four years in high school. For example my freshman year I took a class called Health Caress which was the first step for me in high school to become a registered nurse. In health caress we talked about the systems in detail. These systems are included but not limited to circulatory, respiratory, skeletal, urinary, muscular, digestive, nervous, and reproductive system, and we also talked about first aid, and Basic Life Support (BLS) , and researched the educational requirements and pathways for a variety of a job in the medical field of our choice, and also did a presentation to three judges on the career we chose , but there is also a lot more still left I can do during my junior and senior year in high school. Nursing is a promising career that offers many rewards to caring individuals. It is more than just a job that one attends day to day. Nursing is a career that kind people get in to because they are passionate about life and everything is has to offer. They care for people they have never met before in such a way that makes the patient feel comfortable and able to relax. In a way that makes it possible for the patient to recover from whatever they have encountered. If I am going to spend valuable time and money on education, I want to a job that I absolutely love.
