Billal Ibrahim Block #3 A Long Walk To Water, Literary Analysis Essay In the book, A Long Walk To Water, by Linda Sue Park, Salva realizes that pain is part of life and he just has to push through it. Salva learned while walking through the desert, if you want to go the way you go, pain is sometimes in the path, you just have to push through it. “The first day in the desert felt like the longest day Salva had ever lived through. The sun was relentless and eternal: There was neither a wisp of cloud nor whiff of breeze for relief. Each minute of walking in that arid heat felt like an hour. Even breathing became an effort” (Park, 52) Salva did not give up due to the agony, but he kept trying to keep going. One day in Ethiopia, rebel soldiers had come and started shooting people and things. Salva had to cross the Gilo river. “The rain, the mad current, the bullets, the crocodiles, the welter of arms and legs, the screams, the blood… He had to get …show more content…
Salva had to continue his path even though he got hurt. “The days became a never-ending walk. Salva’s feet kept time with the thoughts in his head, the same words over and over: Where Is my family? Where Is my family?” (Park, 22). So much time has passed and Salva is still hurt that he left his family members. But Salva got through the pain by trying to not think about them and kept going. Salva later found his uncle and he was so hurt that his uncle was going to leave him to got to war. “I will return to Sudan, to fight in the war. Salva stopped walking and clutched Uncle’s arm But, Uncle, I will have no one! Who will be my family?” (Park, 60) When Salva found out that his uncle is leaving him to fight in the war, he suddenly felt a hole in his heart but he got through it. Salva had so many emotions. At times he was about to cry, but he pushed through it to continue his
Running away from your own family and town seems horrible but that’s just what Salva had to do. Salva is a Sudanese child who is stuck in the middle of a war against the Dinka and the Nuer tribe. Salva is the main character in Linda Sue Park’s novel A Long Walk to Water. The book describes the constant struggle of having to live where there is no water, or really bad, not clean, muddy water. The story shows how he ran away into the bush because of a war in his Village. It was not easy to find his family again after Salva ran away. While running from war, he is also separated from his family. Three factors helped Salva survive in a challenging environment, they are Water, his Uncle, and Hope.
To begin, Salva went through a dangerous war but he managed to be mentally strong. When Salva’s uncle had died, the group of refugees that Salva had been traveling with started treated Salva as extra weight. Salva made the choice to keep going. He was determined to prove to the group that he is not useless and can be independent. In Chapter 11 it says, “The way they were treating him made Salva feel stronger still. There is noone left to help me. They think I am weak and useless. Salva lifted his head proudly. They are wrong and I will prove it.”(66) This quote shows that Salva became stronger because it helped Salva realize not to terror his life and that he does not need to depend on anyone and that he is more than what they see and think of him.
The man knew this could be the last time he ever saw his wife and son again, so he asked his wife if she would wait for him to return. This was the mindset of so many citizens across the lands knowing this battle could be the last one some of these men ever fought. Soldiers, some having no idea what kind of enemy they were facing, picturing in their head any possible outcome. Some imagined they were going to be the one to single-handedly taking the Indian army by themselves. Feeling like a modern-day superhero rushing to the battlefield, these young men had hope, which sometimes is all you need. Hope is what starts all revolutions, battles, and explorations, hope is something you need. This time, however, the soldiers needed much more than hope if they were going to get through this
He felt more persisted in proving them wrong in their actions and feelings. He was thinking that someday they’ll look at him as a person to look up to or a hero, not the young helpless little boy he was. Eventually, Salva pursued that dream. He became stronger and became a leader during his walks. When Salva became a leader, he persisted in getting to his destination.
The book A Long Walk to Water caught me not wanting to stop, with great plotline and character development. Salva was a great character who had a very preserverant attitude. While running away from the refugee camp he was forced with a decision to just give up or to carry on. With his attitude he carried through to get through the desert. The best part of the book was when the two stories met together. It was the best because all of the plot and different changes made that last section happen. If it weren’t for Salva coming to America Nya would have never gotten their well. The worst part was, in my opinion, was the repetitiveness of Nya’s story. The saddest part was when Salva’s uncle and best friend died. This was sad because I can feel
No matter how tough the situation might be, London, Steinbeck, and Walker all teach the reader the same thing. They show us how to keep at it and get through a tough situation. Now that we have seen some of the most difficult situations imaginable and some of strongest responses to those situations, we now know just how important perseverance is and how strong anyone can be when they do not give
In life, things will happen, and I can promise you that. Good or bad? There’s no telling, but in either one, you must always persevere. In The Call of the Wild, Buck must keep going and never lose hope. If he does, there is a slim window for survival. When you get badly hurt sometimes you just want to break down and cry, but in my dad’s position that wasn’t an option. While Buck is a dog and my dad is a human, they both can relate. Perseverance is a hard trait to have but in life threatening situations, it can go two ways. We can be broken, but nothing is immendable. We can always be fixed no matter what happens. Buck and my dad can prove that.
The Life of Pi, Siddartha, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and Night are have a common theme of endurance and these book show how much a human can endure without dying. In Night, Elie Wiesel lose his faith, hope, humanity and his father while trying to stay alive in a concentration camp during the Holocaust. Despite all that Elie loses along the way, he survives this atrocity through being able to endure the obstacles that were thrown at him daily by the Nazis and other prisoners. In Siddhartha, the protagonist Siddhartha sets out on a journey to reach enlightenment; however on the way to meet his goal, he had to leave behind the ones he loved and he had to lose himself and his emotions. At times in this novel, Siddhartha was dissatisfied with his
While going on this journey, he is facing many challenges that he has to persevere through with little to no help. Amar said that "A challenge I faced was not having any help from other family members." Just imagine moving to a foreign country with no house and no job. The closest family member to you is halfway around the world. All you have is your wife and two kids. But by never giving up, and having faith in himself, Amar is able to overcome this challenge. In addition to having little help, another challenge Amar encounters is he is moving
...at he is scarred both physically and mentally from all of his experiences, but through all of the violence and hatred, his kindness, integrity, and sympathy can still shine through, however mild and diluted it may be.
The main character, Harry, in the book ‘By The River’ makes many choices that in my opinion weren't the right choices. Many of his bad choices are based on his anger and sometimes peer pressure. An example of one of his wrong choices in my mind is when Harry hurts himself after riding a billycart into a lantana bush. His younger brother persuaded him to ride the billycart, even though they knew that there was no brakes. Harry only rode it to show off to his brother and prove how brave he was. The consequence of this bad choice was a five inch scar on the side of his leg. Harry should have ignored his brother and went back home to fix the billycarts brakes. Another example of when harry makes a choice that can be right or wrong is when Harry
As a retired Seal, I still retain the memories of the struggles and hardships I have encountered over my life. Starting at the age of five, my mother met a man named Leon. He would always criticize me for something I did or what I did wrong. Every little detail that was not done correctly would lead to pain and discipline. This was Leon’s way of ,”setting me straight”. Finally I had enough. I decided to leave home by boarding the wrong bus after school one day out of fear. I was so scared to go home. But I eventually decided that I have to live with it, I knew Leon was going to stay I could do nothing to change that. In life there are things that you can't change. I believe that you must learn to cope with problems in order to succeed, not by running away from them.
Salva used positive attitude to survive. He had to be strong mentality in the head and to stay positive. An example of this he was staying strong for losing his family and love ones. He had a positive attitude that took a lot of mental toughness. A good example of this
Going through life means experiencing great happiness but also great loss. Every loss we face may hurt and cause us grief, but we must let life take its course and endure the pain, for we cannot know true happiness without knowing true sorrow. Kahlil Gibran’s “The Prophet” discusses the hardships that come with pain and loss and gives insight about how a person can overcome that pain. Even the pain might hurt a great deal right now, the wound will only heal if we allow ourselves to feel that pain. As famous poet Lao Tsu once said, “Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.”
Paragraph 2: Another important factor that made survival possible for salva is perseverance. In chapter 9 on page 52 it says, “After only a few minutes Salva had to kick off the flapping shreds and continue barefoot.” That shows perseverance because despite the fact that the sand was scorching. Salva didn’t give up and instead of complaining through the hike across the desert. He endured his pain from the thorns stabbing his feet and stubbing his bare toe on the rock which resulted in his whole toenail coming off. On top of that, the hardest thing Salva had ever done, was taking tiny sips when his body sobbed for huge gulps of thirst- quenching water.
