A Killers Cousin
In the book a killers cousin there is much misunderstanding and quite of bit of suspense. The main character, David Bernard Yaffe, a boy struggling in his last year of high school. David was sent to live with his uncle and aunt and their young daughter, after being on trial for the death of his girlfriend. David's aunt and uncle do not communicate to each other. Lilly has her mind set on making David's life a struggle. In this essay readers will learn about David, and they will Learn about Lilly too. They will also learn how they are alike and different. David and Lilly have characteristics that make them both alike and different.

Just because people within a family are blood related and living together, it does not mean they are identical in their beliefs and actions. In some cases the generations of people in the family have the same way looking at things and understand the same sets of rules and believe in same kind of moral behavior. Unlike that, in the novel, “The Chrysalids”, the protagonist, David Strorm and his father, Joseph, the antagonist have very different characters and conflicting points of view.
The greatest conflict in the book was Man vs. Man for David, because he had to face his childhood of when his sister June had died due to down syndrome. This internal conflict led to the guilt he experienced when dealing with the secret of giving his daughter Phoebe away and lying to Norah(his wife) that Phoebe had died at birth. Norah and the family later realised Phoebe was alive but in that time frame before that the family was falling apart.

Wideman’s essay is different from the rest between his essay is about him and his brother and the struggle of the dominant discourse and the “other” in their relationship. Wideman is the dominant discourse and his brother Robby is the “other”. The problem is that Wideman is trying to understand his brother but he is having difficulties because him and his brother are two different people and they don’t have a common issues that they share. Maturity changes the way people think act and behave towards other people, David the main character displays this clearly as his view on his Father and Uncle Frank develop and change. At the beginning when we are first introduce to all the characters , we see that David admires Uncle Franks as being a hero and just a all round qualities. But this is all changes when David later on discovers that Uncle Frank molesters and take advantage of Indian woman with his power as a doctor. “After what just happened with Marie I don’t want to be left alone with Uncle Frank”. In the Chrysalids, David’s mother, Emily, is not very “mother-like” to David, but although there are other characters that fulfil that role. During the beginning of the story, David encounters Mary Wender, Sophie’s mother, who is introduced to David, on page 10 as a kind, caring, and protective mother to Sophie. Another character who is much like a motherly figure to David is Rosalind, David’s half cousin, as she is a strong, mature, and independent girl as inferred from page 83 to the end of the novel. Though there are many characters that are like a motherly figure to David, these characters have a close relationship with David, depicted as people more motherly to him than his mother, Emily.
... Uncle Frank. Then I got out and watched him go down the tracks. He was going toward town…”. He chooses to tell his parents what he knows, or at least part of what he knows, about Uncle Frank. This shows that he is developing in the area of honesty. Before, David would have kept all this to himself, rather than face his parents with knowledge he knows will displease them.
The author is attempting to teach the readers that no one should treat people this badly. David is an innocent child and does not deserve his bad childhood. David does not even do anything wrong, and his mother continued to treat him like an object. Pelzer succeeded in telling how cruel the mother is. He also teaches that people can be cruel to each other, and that it is important to teach people that kindness can go a long way. The whole book discusses his childhood. Pelzer wrote some sequels to tell the rest of his child life for the interested readers.
1. In the book, the father tries to help the son in the beginning but then throughout the book he stops trying to help and listens to the mother. If I had been in this same situation, I would have helped get the child away from his mother because nobody should have to live like that. The father was tired of having to watch his son get abused so eventually he just left and didn’t do anything. David thought that his father would help him but he did not.
By making that decision to send his daughter away based on his past experience with his sick sister and an assumption about how the future will be. This connects to the ethical topic of techniques of neutralization by Joseph Heath. He uses an excuse to prove that his decision wasn’t unethical when it really was. According to the Denial of responsibility technique, he believed that he had no choice in sending Phoebe away, David saw it as the only option because he was so focused on his past experience. He imagined what Phoebe’s life would be like and the likely toll she would have on the family.
Throughout the novel the characters are put in these situations which force them to obtain information about the people they thought they knew. The center of finding out who everyone is was brought into play through the death of Marie. The story is told by David, only twelve years old, who sees his family an community in a different light for who they truly are under there cover. By doing his own little investigations, often times eavesdropping, David saw through the lies, secures and betrayals to find the truth.

Every person feels rivalry or competition towards others at some point in their lives. This rivalry greatly affects our ability to understand others, and this eventually results in paranoia and hostility. It is a part of human nature, that people coldly drive ahead for their gain alone. Man's inhumanity towards man is a way for people to protect themselves from having pain inflicted on them by others, and achieving their goals and desires without the interference of others. This concept of man's inhumanity to man is developed in A Separate Peace as the primary conflict in the novel centres on the main character, Gene, and his inner-battles with feelings of jealousy, paranoia, and inability to understand his relationship with his best friend Phineas. Competition is further demonstrated by the occurrence of World War II. It is shown that, "There were few relationships among us (the students) at Devon not based on rivalry." (p. 37) It is this rivalry and competition between the boys at Devon that ripped their friendships apart.
