The boys’ toys, however, are mostly dark colors – blue, black, red, gray, or dark green. The colors typically used on either side are very stereotypical in themselves.

As Indians living in white culture, many problems and conflicts arise. Most Indians tend to suffer microaggressions, racism and most of all, danger to their culture. Ethnography is a research method used to explore different cultures from a personal view. Many anthropologists have sought to use ethnography as their main study method because of its specificity and opportunity to get hands on. Those that participate in ethnographies are expected to accurately record detailed accounts of the society in which they are staying, but at the same time maintain a critical distance.
Within every society and every fabric of culture lies a story. These stories portray the very nature of each culture by representing tales of their history, beliefs, and traditions. As individuals recount and pass on the stories of various cultures, the stories represent a different variation that reflects the particular zeitgeist and cultural context of the society in which one tells the story. Society is particularly vulnerable and even impressionable when faced with stories of certain cultures. Often, people judge improperly and prematurely, making one-dimensional views of a culture or society. The goal, then, is to engage the multiple stories within every culture as a method to understand our differences and emphasize the commonalities, which pave the way for greater intercultural dignity and communication.
In Chapter 2 of the textbook Cultural Anthropology, it discusses the understanding of controversial cultural practices. In this case, it is using genital cutting as an example of practices that other cultures value while we criticize them due to our different cultural backgrounds. This ritual is performed on both boys and girls in Africa to demonstrate different meanings. The removal of the male foreskin is something that is seen as acceptable in Western societies due to hygienic and religious reasons. In the Hofriyat culture, this ritual is used to allow a boy to make the step towards manhood. For girls however, this circumcision only allows a girl to save her gift of fertility for marriage. Only then will she become a woman. The process is also extremely different. It involves many painful procedures that seem to do more harm than good.
Material culture is a method that is essential to answering my research question, how did homeownership and the renovation/restoration process create place identity? I define material culture as the material representation of the culture (Culture, 2007; Schlereth, 1982; Glassie, 1999). The definition I use for place identity is how the house is a reflection of a resident’s ideologies (Droseltis & Vignoles, 2010). These two ideas come together in the field of material culture studies. Materials culture studies embody the work of scholars and researchers that examine human behavior through the lens of objects using a variety of approaches. Taking five pieces of scholarship I identify a source each researcher used, and how they used material culture.
The literature found on the subjects of archaeology, popular culture, and museums serves to supplement the data collected by the author through a series of three surveys, as outlined in the methodology presented in chapter three. These surveys, whose analyses can be read in chapter four, were conducted at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and nationally through the online platform Google Sheets. These surveys sought to uncover what kinds of misconceptions museum educators are aware of that are held by the participants of these archaeological programs. The Cambridge Dictionary defines cultural appropriation as “the act of taking or using things from a culture that is not your own, especially without showing that you understand or respect this culture. This is evident through the taking of objects such as Native headdresses, dreamcatchers, costumes, etc. Often times when people take from cultures, they give the object its own meaning or disregard the true significance which is considered appropriation. On Sunday, October 16th, I went to a Special Ops Gun show in Hilliard. I chose this event because I know nothing about guns, and for the most part, I do not like them. So to say I am not part of the gun culture is an understatement; it’s a culture I am completely distanced from due to growing up in Ohio’s most metropolitan city. The people I saw at this event are the same type of people I see at Field and Stream when walking into the mall. Most of them appeared to be over 30, there was hardly any children, and the majority were white -with the occasional racial minority here and there.
