A Disease of Concern for Females - Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

As females we are taught to maintain a healthy body by eating the right foods, exercising and scheduling regular checkups with the doctor. However, there are several diseases that affect the human female body. Pelvic inflammatory disease is one of many diseases that affect the female reproductive system, and it is a disease women should be concerned with.

Pelvic inflammatory disease is an infectious disease that invades the female reproductive organs such as the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. Pelvic inflammatory disease also known as PID, is caused by infectious bacteria such as Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhea and other bacteria. Bacteria that travel from the vagina to the cervix will cause inflammation, pain, damage and infertility. Women, who are susceptible to PID, will develop the disease if they have unprotected sex with a person who is infected with Chlamydia or gonorrhea. However, not all women will develop PID and it is not known why. In rare circumstances, PID will occur due to the following events such as abortions, miscarriage, insertion of IUD, Pap smear procedure and cervical treatment for having an abnormal pap smear (familydoctor.org editorial staff, 2008).

Pelvic Inflammatory disease is the most common and serious infection that women can acquire. This disease has caused many problems to more than 1 million women per year, and billions of dollars are spent for diagnose and treatment. In addition, it is responsible for about 250,000 hospitalizations every year. Females that are 25 years or younger, and are sexually active are at risk for developing PID. Other risk factors include past history of pelvic inflammatory disease, multiple sexual partners, unprotected sex, sexual encounters at a young a...

In conclusion, it is important women are aware of the severity of pelvic inflammatory disease, and be concerned with the damage it can do to the female reproductive system.
