Ethnocentrism, the belief in the inherent superiority of one's own ethnic group or culture, has been the cause of genocide throughout history. Two examples of Ethnocentrism include the Nazi party during the Third Reich and the Hutu reign in Rwanda during the late 20th century. During the 20th century, the Holocaust and the Rwandan Genocide, two historically astounding genocides, took place containing similarities in the motive to kill but differentiating in their techniques. Although the war or problem does not start over night, it is usually one event that is seen as a “kick start”. The “kick start” for the Rwandan Genocide occurred on April 6, 1994. It was late night when President Juvenal Habyarimana was on his way back from Tanzania. He signed the Arusha Accords, which allowed Tutsis to participate in government. This weakened the Hutu Regime greatly. The Hutu resorted to shooting down President Habyarimana’s plane, which ended in his death. The term genocide brings awful things to mind. For most, it probably directs their attention towards the Holocaust; this was definitely a gruesome and obvious example of genocide, but there are many others with great similarities that are not very well known. One of these is the decimation of the Native American population by the European settlers and the atrocious things that were done to them such as the trail of tears following the Indian Removal Act of 1830 during the settling of North America. The Holocaust might be the most well known but there have been many other incidents in history just as abhorrent. The Holocaust and Native American Genocide are different in weapons used and the motives for killing but similar in intent, effects and selection of the persecuted.

Imagine every friend, every neighbor, every single person in one city being raped, killed, tortured. In the genocide known as the Rape of Nanking, the city of Nanjing was brutally taken captive by the Japanese. On the other hand, all of Germany attacked the Jews. But both of the genocides involved killing, raping, and dehumanizing. The Holocaust exterminated a whole lot more people than the Rape of Nanking. Germany also paid for their crimes, while Japan hardly acknowledged it. Both genocides also happened during the same time period, too. The Rape of Nanking was a smaller genocide than the Holocaust, but they still have their similarities and differences.
Hitler wanted a pure nation and he thought he could get that by having only the Aryan race in Germany (“Background”). The people of Germany, seeing their economic problems start to get better, ignored the discrimination and let the Nazis put their plan into action. Hitler had one goal and that was to kill every single Jew in Europe (Haugen and Musser). After capturing towns, cities, and countries, Hitler would take all the Jews and put them into concentration camps (Haugen and Musser). Some camps were designed purely to kill every single Jew that was sent there, while some were labor camps.
Though many Jews were able to emigrate out of Germany before further persecution took place, it was substantially difficult for every Jew to escape the impending danger that was looming large in both Nazi Germany and Austria. Reasons for emigration being very difficult included the reluctance of Jews to move when they had lived in Germany all their lives, and had generations of family members who have all been brought up in Germany, and some who had even served for Germany during the First World War. The prospect of leaving family behind was too much to fathom for Jews, as some Jews were married to non-Jewish women, and considered themselves more German rather than Jewish. This essay will however focus on a variety of factors which include economic problems faced by Jews even before the Anschluss was introduced in 1938, immigration restrictions set out acutely for Jewish immigrants by Western countries such as Britain and the United States in particular, and the role Anti-Semitism played throughout the world during this time period, that prevented and severely halted a majority of Jews to emigrate out of Nazi Germany and Austria, after the Anschluss and up until the outbreak of the Second World War.

The Darfur-Sudan Genocide began in 2003 and is still going on today (“Darfur Genocide”). A militia of government-supported people called the Janjaweed has been killing and destroying villages of non-Arab people (“Darfur Genocide”). Al-Bashir general of the National Islamic Front has been leading the persecution (“Darfur: A History” 18). The Holocaust and the Darfur-Sudan genocide are similar in that both their countries and leaders had the same economic status and mind set, however they are different in how the United States and other countries’ were involved and the type of war that was going on during them.
The crime of genocide is one of the most devastating human tragedies throughout the history. And the word genocide refers to an organised destruction to a specific group of people who belongs to the same culture, ethnic, racial, religious, or national group often in a war situation. Similar to mass killing, where anyone who is related to the particular group regardless their age, gender and ethnic background becomes the killing targets, genocide involves in more depth towards destroying people’s identity and it usually consists a fine thorough plan prearranged in order to demolish the unwanted group due to political reasons mostly. While the term genocide had only been created recently in 1943 by Raphael Lemkin, a Polish-Jewish legal scholar, from the ancient Greek word “genos” meaning race and the Latin word “cide” meaning killing , there are many examples of genocide like events that occurred before the twentieth century. The Rwandan Genocide was a terrible event in history caused by a constantly weakening relationship between two groups of people. The country of Rwanda is located in Africa and consists of multiple groups of people. Majority of Rwanda is Hutu, while a smaller amount of people are Tutsis. The genocide started due to multiple events that really stretched the relationship between the two groups to its end. One of the starting factors was at the end of World War 1. Rwanda was a German colony but then was given to Belgium “who favored the minority Tutsis over the Hutus, exacerbated[exacerbating] the tendency of the few to oppress the many”(History.com). (Dictionary )During the beginning of the 20th century, the Herero, an ethnic group of indigenous African herdsmen were slaughtered by the Germans. The Herero people migrated to Southwest Africa, present day Namibia, in the 1600s. Then, in the 1800s, there was a “scramble for Africa” as European countries started colonizing and imperializing. During the Berlin Conference, European countries came together to divide up Africa, giving Germany Southwest Africa where the Herero people lived. Like the other European countries, Germany used its African colonial holdings to gain national prestige. As the Germans came into Southwest Africa, they asserted their control by taking over the economy and social life in Africa. As tensions rose between the Herero and Germans, the Herero people revolted. In retaliation, the German army came in and slaughtered the Herero. The Herero population went from 80,000 in 1904 and plummeted to a shocking 14,000 by the end of the revolt and genocide in 1911. (Perez 2) The Herero revolt and genocide of 1903-1908 occurred due to German colonialism in Southwest Africa, racism towards the Herero people, and Germany’s use of militarism to gain national power.
The United Nations was formed on October 24, 1945, after the Holocaust, to prevent genocide from ever happening again. A cartoon depicted by Michael Sutherland illustrated the unsuccessful intent of the United Nations. The United Nations is pictured standing over many graves of countries and groups that have suffered from genocide. However, many genocides have taken place since the formation of the United Nations (i.e. the Bosnian genocide). Both genocides began as simple misconception or dislike between peoples but ended in tragic and unnecessary murder.
