Ethnocentrism, the belief in the inherent superiority of one's own ethnic group or culture, has been the cause of genocide throughout history. Two examples of Ethnocentrism include the Nazi party during the Third Reich and the Hutu reign in Rwanda during the late 20th century. During the 20th century, the Holocaust and the Rwandan Genocide, two historically astounding genocides, took place containing similarities in the motive to kill but differentiating in their techniques. Most Jewish people lived in Nazi Germany and the countries that Nazi Germany had controlled. By 1945, the Nazis had killed nearly two out of every three European Jews. This mass killing was known as the Holocaust or The Final Solution. Although the Jews were the primary target, other deaths included about 200,000 Gypsies and about 200,000 mentally or physically disabled persons. Although the war or problem does not start over night, it is usually one event that is seen as a “kick start”. The “kick start” for the Rwandan Genocide occurred on April 6, 1994. It was late night when President Juvenal Habyarimana was on his way back from Tanzania. He signed the Arusha Accords, which allowed Tutsis to participate in government. This weakened the Hutu Regime greatly. The Hutu resorted to shooting down President Habyarimana’s plane, which ended in his death.
