The modern period was a time of changing and individualism. Modern Literature usually reflected the life of the people of that time. Some of the artists of this time were affected by “The Great War” or World War II. These authors, poets, painters, etc. would go off in the shock of this war and try and find some light and some hope. One can see the tragedy and the sadness that some of these artists went through, in their works. For example, a change of color in an artist’s paint, a sway to the darker side of things in the imagery and word choice of poets, and most of all, authors writing tragic novels. Two of the types of novels that they wrote were modern tragic and Aristotelian tragic.

It was written by an author by the name of John Steinbeck, and it shows the struggles of two men looking for work in the 1930’s. The two main characters are named Lennie Small and George Milton. George is the protagonist and Lennie travels and works with him. Lennie is a little slow, clumsy, and forgetful, and he almost completely depends on George to get him out of tough places and into jobs. George also takes care of Lennie by helping him escape after he has done bad things. George does most of the talking whenever they are around other people, and he does his best to try and protect Lennie from others and even himself. Lennie doesn’t know his own strength and likes soft things like puppies, rabbits, mice, etc. However, the things he pets usually end up dying because he pets them to hard. The story takes place in California on a ranch where the two find work. This book is an Aristotelian tragic novel because of the intrapersonal conflict that George constantly
