“All human beings, as we meet them, are comingled out of good and bad” (pg. 78). says Jekyll, reflecting on human kind. In the story of the two characters, Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the journey of switching back and forth becomes problematic rapidly. Throughout the story it becomes evident that it is harmful to try and separate the good and bad tendencies and hide the evil side. The experiments Jekyll went through seemed beneficial at first but later showed to be harmful.
The Jekyll personality displays morality, whereas the Hyde personality exhibits evil. “In the novel, Stevenson creates a hero in Dr. Jekyll, who aware of the evil in his own being, and sick of the duplicity in his life, succeeds by way of his experiments on himself in freeing the pure evil part of his being as Mr. Hyde, so that each can indulge in a life unfettered by the demands of the other” (pg. 222).
He is afraid of who he has become and how the evil is taking over his life. Jekyll says, “I was slowly losing hold of my original and better self, and becoming slowly incorporated with my second and worse” (pg. 84). When he realizes the problems this is causing, he starts to ignore his peers and become closed off. His two friends Utterson and Enfield observe him over time and realize Jekyll is struggling and turning into someone else.
Jekyll quickly becomes frightened because he may never be able to return to his original self. He becomes ashamed of who he has become and wants good back into his life. As matters spin out of control, he starts to regret doing these experiments in the first place. In hopes of returning to his original self, Jekyll frantically attempts to tamper with the potion. The potion eventually begins to run out, therefore, he is forced to create new. He tries to change the doses and ingredients to regain control.
