My ambition to pursue a health-related career derived from my passion for helping and caring for people. However, deciding on a profession did not come as easy. Participating in my high school’s health academy was just the stepping-stone into the health world. After graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Exercise Science, I was still not sure of the specific health career to pursue.
I volunteered at Sportsmedicine Hawaii Ltd as well as Hi’olani Care Center at Kahala Nui to explore working directly with the physical and occupational therapists. Interacting with the patients at the physical therapy clinic allowed me to enhance my social skills with patients by conversing while guiding them through their exercise regimen. Working closely with the nursing home residents made me realize that I wanted to work with people, however, the physical/occupational therapy route was not for me. During my volunteer time at the skilled nursing facility, I found that the close interaction between the nurses and residents made a substantial impact on the quality of a patient’s life. …show more content…

Working at Hi’olani Care Center as well as The Queen’s Medical Center on a Urology/Plastics unit as a nurse aide provided confirmation that nursing is where I am supposed to be. Although a nurse’s workload is challenging and demanding, it brings much reward and self-fulfillment. Working with nurses has taught me that sensitivity and compassion are equally important as medical knowledge in the profession of nursing and well-being of people who are sick or in scary or health threatening situations. Caring for individuals on a holistic level is an important quality that nurses bring to the health care
