Women and girls fashion in the 1990s is very distinct. While not quite as loud as the eighties, the nineties took that attitude and tried to be a little smarter and a little classier. Sometimes designers succeeded, sometimes they didn’t. Some common items of clothing from the 1990s: black leggings with oversized sweater, low heel shoes, flannel shirts, denim everything, t-shirts, sweatpants, skirts, Birkenstocks, solid colors, silk shirts, turtlenecks (under cardigans or sweaters), plain white Keds and army surplus clothing to name a few. Like most decades, fashion changed somewhat drastically from the beginning of the nineties to the end. The early nineties started off exactly like 1989, but by 1993, the 1991 look was “so 80s.” Simply put, nearly everyone had completely revamped their …show more content…
Along with those fluorescent slap bracelets. And skip-its (which were actually banned at school due to aggressive misuse). But bearing in mind our newfound (re-found?) obsession with dungarees and slip dresses, the nineties weren’t all bad” writes Marie Claire. One of the most influential people in the fashion industry in the nineties was Katie Moss. Breaking into the industry when she was just a teenager, Kate Moss is a household name when it comes to the world of fashion. Kate Moss was undeniably part of the supermodel clan that dominated the nineties, famed for her slim and ‘boyish’ figure and one of the faces of the (controversially named) ‘heroin chic’ look. She’s been the face of huge brands such as Burberry, Chanel, Rimmel, Topshop, Mango and many more. ““When you’re shooting you go to references in your mind. You think about how you should stand in these particular clothes, or how you should move. You think about the different characters you’re playing, really.” explains Katie Moss, as she described her experiences with fashion in the nineties as being one of classiness and
If we didn’t have fashion then a lot of people wouldn’t have jobs because there are a whole bunch of fashion designers out there, also all of the celebrities wouldn’t have name brand clothing because there would be no way to make them because we wouldn’t have designers. Fashion of the 1920’s played a very big role in today’s fashion. Including the material our clothing is made out of also the styles of clothing we wear. Many things women wear today first came from fashion in the 1920's. Flappers, shoe styles, and accessories are a few things that we wear today have came from. Many celebrities still wear some things that people wore in the 1920's including flappers. Have you ever wondered what the amazing fashion of the 1920's was like?
At the forefront of pop culture, fashion distinctly identified diversity in trends. The 1980s commenced a considerable amount of dominating styles all at once. MTV showcased fashion movements directly associated with music. Fans would depict their idols personal style, that were advertised in music videos. Madonna was the pioneer for cone bras, fingerless lace gloves and an assemblage of rubber bracelets. She determined the way women dressed in the 1980s, through her adventurous avenue to fashion. Her rebellious nature promoted underwear as outerwear, exhibiting crinoline and lace bustiers. After realising ‘Like a Virgin’ social boundaries were broken due to the sexual context and religious metaphors depicted in her virginal wedding dress (Voller, 1992). MTV’s audience, primarily teenagers, were fuelled by an impression of revolt, soon after the punk movement
In the 90’s, the concept of music was a huge explosion compared to previous years, though there were many more acts of creativity. Primarily, music played a huge part in society as apposed to other decades. Most well known from this time were the bands Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime and Rage Against the Machine, just to name a few. These bands most defiantly showed the creativeness that America possessed and is proved by the amount of 90’s music that is still widespread. Another concept of creativeness was fashion. Two main forms of clothing came around that set America aside from the rest of the world. This was the beginning of jeans and flannel shirts. Having these pieces of clothing widespread throughout the country defiantly set America apart. Finally, pop culture in this era also showed our nations creativeness. Pokemon had stuck out the most from everything else. The production of millions of “baseball cards” with animated animals on them was a huge sensation for kids and teens across the country. The enjoyment of having a strong pull of creativeness in America was not a bad thing at all, yet a decade cannot always be perfect.
The styles at the beginning of this decade were influenced heavily on the music. With the invention of iPods later in this decade, music was making an imprint on fashion. Rap music had a major influence on the dress of this decade. The Pop Punk look included low rise jeans, crop tops and trucker hats. Accessories included bellow button rings and piercings. Most of this style came from the previous decade and filtered into the beginning of the 2000s. Hip-hop dress took the influence from artists who dressed in baggy clothes. This transformed the fashion world by celebrities wearing Ugg boots and tracksuits. Near the end of this decade the hit television show Gossip Girl aired. This created the trend of private-school preppy to hit the
Girls seemed to have gone through a dramatic change during the eighties. A sense of power was realized by the women and the want to express this power and their individuality came with it. The clothing that girls wore would have surely been looked down on in the previous decades but were welcomed with open arms. Some of the biggest trends included; bold neon colors, loose shirts, tight pants, and plenty of lace. Though girls had been sweet and proper before the eighties had seemed to bring a sense that you just could not contain them. The men also reached their peak in the mid eighties. In previous decades the men would typically wear suits or more upscale causal attire but like the girls that seemed to go out of style. Trends such as parachute pants, jackets or vests, cut off shirts, and tight pants rose to popularity is the beginning or mid eighties. Just like the women’s styles clothing was usually in bright, bold, neon colors. You could also usually find large sunglasses, and converse or vans in a typical boy’s closet. Just as the girls men became very expressive and tried to find their individuality. They seemed to public...
The UK Fashion in the 1960's was a Start of a new Era The 1950’s and earlier decades saw a plain form of clothing. It all started in the late back 1950s in London, England and entered in the early mid 1960s. The mod movement originally began from Britain where the mod style was first a subculture developed by teenagers to break away from the stiffness of the 50’s hideous looks and to emulate the more stylish Italian, French and, American fashion. Men were uniformed in their standard dress of grey slacks and white shirts. Women to a large degree wore simple home made dresses in colorless grey's and beige frocks. The 1960’s fashions were probably the influence to what we wear today Baby boomers were growing up and demanding their own fashion
As previously stated, fashion during the first decade of 1980 demonstrate that Americans are expressive and obsessive. Sara and Tom Pendergast states “The fashion boom of the 1980s was more international than ever before” (977). Fashion was a big deal. People were proud to display their style. It’s clear to say that they have become expressive and obsessive. There was a rise and fall in the status of high end clothing designers and their extravagant clothes. Fashion came roaring back in the 80s with popular clothing items that were often associated with music trends. There was the punk/goth look, the preppy look, the grunge look, and the formal look along with accessories. The alternatives for those who still wanted to follow fashion were at a reasonable price. Paris, New York, and London were the true centers of world fashion.
In the early nineties, women were hyper-sexualized and viewed as pawns in a game. MTV showed music videos with scantily clad women which were seen as extremely scandalous at the time. The nineties was also an era of growth, liberalization and sex...
Television and movies were at its golden moments as majority of Tv shows and movies classics came from the 90s like the simpsons which is “The series currently holds the record for the longest-running prime-time sitcom in the US, running for 25 years since 1989, and becoming the longest-running program on FOX”(Wiki). American movie classics were born like Titanic, Forrest gump, Toys story, and The Matrix. Movies and Tv shows were amazing during this time but the “icing to the cake” of Entertainment came from videogames as gaming companies fought to get more support and purchase of their consoles and games as gaming became popular because of these games Super mario, Pokemon, Mortal Kombat, Sonic, Zelda and Tetris. Fashion of the 1990s was wild and colorful with crazy geometric shapes and If your clothes were not baggy then you were considered lame. Plenty of popular clothing brands in the 21st century made their launch to popularity because of the 90s. The group who molded 90s fashion to be greatest where the youth, the youth were the ones who started so many popular fashion trends that would make the 90s have a unique look. You were not a 90s kid if you did not have a pair or a bunch of Levi’s jeans, Levi’s was the go to jean as the popular 517 and 501 were born and everyone was cutting their Levi’s, Rolling up their Levi’s, or even
The young generation gives much attention to their looks because of several reasons; many teens are after their out-look appearance in order to make a statement among his or her peers. Some use clothing to make a personal statement about their style, financial status or even their taste of cloths and accessories. By dressing in a particular way will express their personalities and preference. To wear items that are outside these boundaries make them feel as if they have also changed their personalities. Fashion is like a brand in which most of these young people would like to be identified with. To them being identified by a certain kind of trendy look makes they stand out as exceptional and confidence in themselves and the decision they make.
“It was different in the USA, where wartime restrictions had been quickly removed, and where the new ‘consumer society’ was forging ahead – helped by new developments such as the start of the credit card system in 1950. But these differing conditions produced a similar effect on fashion both in Europe and America – a tendency to prefer the safe and normal, a veering away from the radical and extreme. ‘Normal’ felt good, especially with the memory of the war still so fresh in many people’s minds” (Baker 6). Fashion is an important aspect to people’s lives, and is influenced by various parts of society. Sometimes there are practical reasons behind certain fashion trends, but there are some trends that have no apparent origin or purpose. Fashion can also influence other parts of popular or high culture, including music. “Rock n’ roll,” the music of the 1950’s, displayed young people’s (17-25 year-olds) interest in clothes, as heard in such pop tracks as “White Sports Coat” and “Blue Suede Shoes” (Baker 12). Regardless of purpose or origin, “style [in the 1950’s] often meant super luxury, whether it was the use of lots of shiny chrome or lace, shimmering with sequins” (Baker 11). During the 1950’s, style was not only a portrayal of one’s sense of fashion – it was a portrayal of who you were.
“The point is ladies and gentlemen that greed, for lack of a better word, is good.” This quote from Gordon Gecko in the 1987 movie Wall Street sums up the1980s decade. After 1960s and 1970s, the 1980s was filled with hardworking and serious consumers. By the 1980s people were tired of the 1970s political discontent. They wanted a change and wanted to start feeling better about themselves and feel good about their country again . The decade was filled with shoulder pads and suits, ripped sweatshirts and t-shirts, designer brands, and fingerless gloves. Women wanted to look sexy and feminine, strong and in control while men wanted to be look masculine,

You are not stylish! You aren’t elegant! You’re not good-looking! These are my comments to anyone who follows the most ridiculous fashion trends in the 2000s. I urge all the people who believe that they are svelte by wearing Low rise jeans, Juicy tracksuits, Crocs, Ugg boots, and Tights or Leggings as pants to come around and think again about all of these absurd designs. Now you are young, try to think about these designs when you become old. I am quite sure that you will laugh at yourself, and blame yourself for wearing these atrocious styles. For example, what would you say to your grandchildren when they see your photos in low rise jeans? Let me answer this question for you: just hide these photos since you don’t have any justification for making this goof.
