Technology could potentially thrust us into various forms of dictatorship and oppression if not used for morally correct reasons. In the book “1984,” by George Orwell, a country by the name of Oceania is under the rule of totalitarian regime. Technology plays an astounding roll in the oppression of the people of oceania and with governmental technology use on the rise it is understandable as to why some would fear for our own country. Although, as long as a government can learn to properly use it while still respecting the privacy and rights of the citizens, I believe that we will not end up as Oceania is in Orwell’s novel.
In “1984,” citizens deemed as a potential danger to the party were watched intensively by a device called a “telescreen”. This device would keep track of the individuals every movement; every hour of every day they spent being monitored by Big Brother. The main difference between the government surveillance in Oceania and our nation, is that in Oceania the government abuses their power to the extreme. Our government has the power to act in the same way with cell phones as Big Brother does with telescreens, but most of the …show more content…

The closest we come would be cell phones, these devices act as handy trackers, listening devices, and act in many more ways to lessen an individual’s standard of privacy. Although a vast majority of people use cell phones on a day to day basis it is important to realize that cell phones are neither mandatory to own, nor monitored nearly as heavily as Big Brother’s telescreens are.While cell phones could turn into a modern day telescreen extremely easily without correct government leadership, we are protected by The Constitution to have a right to privacy. Thus being the reason why oceania would not exist in our country
