While it is good to evaluate a decade, it is often better to evaluate the decade a few years after the era ends rather than during the era. This video was released in 1989, before the decade had a chance to expire. Therefore, the news reporters are not capturing the whole era because a significant event could have taken place in 1989. This event then could have then come to define the era. By reporting on a decade that they are still living in, the reporters are mostly stating what happened rather than reflecting upon the events that occurred. By discussing the 1980s a few years later, the news casters could have reflected upon the major events of the decade to determine how those events affected future decades. So, while the specific parties and events are unique to the 1980s, they are not constricted to the 1980s. One thing that might be remotely 1980s based is how they handled diseases, mainly aids. People originally thought it was something that only gay people could contract and they began to term it the gay disease. That narrow minded idea would not and really could not exist today because of how diverse the world is. On the other hand, many events like the constant fighting and war has not stopped or remotely slowed down. There are many parallels between the 1980s and today’s era that almost nothing can be considered exclusively 1980s based. Thirty years later the fighting has moved from Gaza to Syria but the premise for fighting has not changed. Furthmore, 1980s saw a severe rise in the use of cocaine and some people even wanted it taxed and legalized. This parallels today except the drug of choice is marijuana. Events that shape a decade are often ongoing and ever evolving throughout that decade. While these events are sometime resolved, it often takes more than one decade to fully resolve an issue.
