A country’s strength comes solely on the social theory of nationalism, to give loyalty and love for that country even if it means sacrificing ones own life to defend it. Whether its called the homeland, motherland, or holy land, citizens of a country define it, if not, its really just a large mass of land. The United States of America has instituted many rights to its citizens, which were issued in the bill of rights they are the first ten amendments. The first amendment mentions the free exercise clause, freedom of speech and of press, and by interpreting it says that congress cannot make any laws constricting to a established religion or prohibiting the free exercise. Because of the interpretation of the first amendment immigrants believe that they may come to the United States and maintain the lifestyle and cultures they had lived by in their country of origin. These immigrants are taking advantage of this system, which for them is the American dream. They don’t realize that in the United States one is basically required to adapt to this culture to succeed in that dream. They also don’t realize that the diversity that they are causing is hurting the United States in its mission for unity. A country is at its fullest strength when it is a nation united. Michael Savage a conservative author and radio talk show host believes that “borders, language, and culture” are the foundations that support any nation. I believe in what Mr. Savage is saying is true, seeing that the formual of borders, language and culture will equal unity among a nation which will help achieve greater strengths. When an immigrant enters our country they apply for U.S. citizenship or green card. In order to proceed with obtaining it they must take ... ... middle of paper ... ...lty and that is a loyalty to the American people." I believe President Roosevelt is right on his issues, that immigrants should only be loyalty to one country the U.S. and that they should only communicated in one language English and if they don’t adjust to it they don’t belong in this country. Our country needs to be the primary country in the hearts of its citizens. I believe in the ethical approach of utilitarianism, which is says, “The right way to behave in a given situation is to choose the alternative that is likely to produce the greatest overall good.” If the United States imposes that the English language should become the official language then they are giving this nation the next step towards unity. Which in can cause a chain reaction to help the U.S. reach a stronger foundation of nationalism and which to me seems to be the greatest overall good.
The society will be less divided and will function better under a common language. Although English-only movement has close connections to restrictionist, anti-immigration organizations, which suggests that the English-only movement has a wider, more far-reaching, and more negative agenda than simply advocating an official English language policy, English should be the official language of United States for two main reasons: first, In 1990 US census reported that 97.1 % of the US population speak English; second and most importantly, making English the official language of the United States refers solely to the language of the government, not of the people, private business, classrooms, or more. In addition, declare English the official language of the United States would make easier business and negotiations, more people will be able to participate in democracy system, the population will have a better understanding of laws, and the diversity of languages spoken in the US will not be affect, indeed, it would have an
The author, Jo-Ann Pilardi accurately writes about immigration in her article “Immigration Problem Is about Us, Not Them.” All Immigrants, whether they are legal or illegal know that having the chance to live in America, is a dream come true or in other words, “a chance in paradise.” America is known for its opportunities. Immigrants came to the United States for a very significant purpose. Their purpose and goal is to take advantage of the opportunities in the land known as, “the land of opportunity.” Immigrants did not come here to damage the country or to over burden its inhabitants. That author states, “Many of our political leaders talk hard line about immigration reform even though they know our country is mired in its demand for the
“Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate” (Kennedy 464). He builds a thought within the audience about being strong and talks later on about what makes people fearful and why it shouldn’t make them fearful. He explains how people should be ready to face obstacles and judgements that they put on themselves. Like being easily offended or being selfish, these circumstances cannot make people fearful. For example, now a days Americans blame immigrants for taking their jobs and for the increase in crime but if they looked past that judgement and worked with immigrants for a better place they could come up with a solution. Maybe immigrants have skills that Americans don’t have and if they work together, immigrants could share those skills with Americans and become better. He’s insistent on working together throughout his speech and the good outcomes that could come out of working together. He also asks the audience a rhetorical question, “ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country” (Kennedy 464). Again, he puts a selfless thought in the audience about forgetting judgments and obstacles and focusing on building a successful country. He brings in a sense of patriotism for the audience to feel obligated to work for a better country. Focusing on his idea of change and how change will come
English as the official language of the United States could benefit the U.S. Government and America as a whole. America has long been a multicultural nation and has been an English-speaking nation since it was founded. The constitutional and federal documents are all in English, which furthers the American people, believing English should be our official language. The majority of states already have English as their official language, for English has always provided much needed cohesion to our diverse citizens since it was founded. Being made of diverse people, and being able to continue to use your own language may seem preferable as we encourage individuality and do not want anyone to disappear into the soup.
Many people have come to America for a better life and to get away from all the troubles of their homeland. These immigrants, like those throughout U.S. history, are generally hard workers and make important contributions to the economy through their productive labor and purchasing power. America is considered a melting pot of many diffrent ethinic group. Immigrants should be able to enter America with little if any resistance from any border patrol. Immigrants in america take the low paying, hard labor jobs that , unfortunately, some americans don't want.
In his article, ‘One Nation, One of Many’ he claims that lack of shared values in a multicultural society will pose a threat to ‘America’ as an entity. He shows evidence of this by giving statistical data of the number of immigrants who have come into the country over the years. And he has gave data from surveys on the political and cultural fragmentation that have occurred since the influx in the early 1960s. He further supports his claim by suggesting that the elite and popular opinion should find a middle ground so that the immigration crisis can be
The distance between the new arrivals and the natives fosters a sense of distrust on both ends. However, the concern that the growing population of immigrants will compromise America’s national identity undermines our national reality. Historically, those who have willingly immigrated to the United States have had a desire to become part of American society, crossing borders and seas t...
Migration for “a better life” or to be with one’s family shaped the history of the United States since the beginning. In the US today there are 40 million immigrants and the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that there is around 11 million illegal aliens already living right here and are not authorized to live and work in the United States. It makes it hard to protect their right because they are in this country illegal. Immigrant are living in the US are in constant fear of being deported so they live in quiet hiding so that they go undetected by US officials. They are so fearful of deportation that they don’t report crimes against them or employers that take advantage of them or do not pay them for work.
The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic. The men who do not become Americans and nothing else are hyphenated Americans; and there ought to be no room for them in this country. The man who calls himself an American citizen and who yet shows by his actions that he is primarily the citizen of a foreign land, plays a thoroughly mischievous part in the life of our body politic. He has no place here; and the sooner he returns to the land to which he feels his real heart-allegiance, the better it will be for every good American. There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
Language can bring people together but can also isolate. The United States is known as a melting pot, not only does that refer to culture but also the many different languages. We know of language barriers, but very seldom do we think of the language barriers within our borders. Even with the language barriers it solidifies the need for a national language, the United States of America should allow the freedom to express one’s culture while maintaining English as our national language, therefore offering common ground to its citizens.
The beauty is that we even share cultures day to day and speak different languages. There is an enormous variety amongst ourselves and there has to be a place here in the states for anyone to enjoy. Immigration policies can utterly destroy all of this and ruin the authentic mixture of cultures the states are known for. “The ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity brought by immigrants in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has shaped American history and politics.”
...powerful forces in binding people together, nationalism is a powerful force capable of inducing people to act collectively, share burdens, and even make sacrifices for the nation’s common good. As a result, it promotes the stability of democracies.
The United States is made up of many different ethic groups. These groups vary from Latinos, Asian American, African American, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, and etc. These ethnic groups come into America speaking many different languages. However, many people are still surprised to learn that the United States has no official language. Many assume that English is the official language of the United States. But despite efforts over the years, the United States has no official language. Because the United States has no official language, it is suffering with large costs. These large costs will lead us on a road to wasteful government expenses, language battles that fuel ethnic resentment, and in the long run serious ethnic and linguistic separatist movements. An official English legislation is the answer to the problem.
Immigrants have always been an important part of United States’ population. Each year, there are hundreds of thousands of immigrants, from all around the world, including legal and illegal, come into the United States for job opportunities, new life, or the American Dream. “Immigrants have contributed significantly to the development of the United States. During the Lincoln administration, immigrants were actually encouraged to come to America, as they were considered valuable to the development of the country.” (Soylu & Buchanan, 2013). They believe that the US will give them more freedom, protection, and opportunities, which sometimes it becomes the major issues for immigrants. That’s why “the U.S. population is becoming more racially and
“What makes someone American isn 't just blood or birth, but allegiance to our founding principles and faith in the idea that anyone form anywhere can write the next chapter of our story” –Barack Obama. Immigration is flawed in the United Sates. Most North Americans have a feeling of hate towards immigrants from all over the world, because they think that immigrants are taking their jobs. The fact is that immigrants actually play a huge role in the economy and development of a country. The whole United States is built on immigrants. Throughout American history, millions of people around the world have left their home countries for a chance to start a new life in the U.S and they continue to emigrate. There are some theories as to why people
