Over the last few decade, the number of international student has risen not specially in the UK but all over the world. It is known that every nation has its own language, customs, cultures and traditions. This may effect the way of thinking or an academic style of reading, writing and another types of an academic style. This essay will evaluate linn,2009 claim that international student must learn a new way of thinking and writing when they come to study in the UK-type academic environment and outline the controversial point that should be considered.

Firstly, according to( linn,2009,p.3) English writers use explicit discourse marker which helps the writers to organize ideas and also helps reader follow along from one sentence to another. In addition, (linn,2009.p3) mentioned that Finnish writers use fewer explicit discourse marker such as, signpost, connectors and linking words than English writers. This may not be true because there are two possible reasons that should be considered. Firstly, it can be said that Arabic writers are similar to English writers in that both must use explicit discourse markers, which help them to organize ideas and show the strength of coherence .A good illustration of this that Arabic writers must use the words like ’maa thalk however ’ lakn‘ but. Secondly, linn just represented one example about Finnish writers who use fewer explicit discourse markers than English writers. This mean that Finnish students have to study an English academic style of writing not all international students. In addition, linn did not give an example about some languages which place emphasis on coherence of meaning instead of coherence of form.

Secondly, in spite of the similarity between Arabic writers and English writers with using explicit discourse markers in their essay, Arabic writers tend to make every point complex and difficult to understand. They do not avoid repetition and they often quote from other research without having any benefits. In addition, their arguments seem strident rather than polite and reasonable. Thirdly. English academic writing is really quite different in its styles and structures. English reader expect to find an academic arguments simple, direct, clear, follow by reasons and supporting sentences. In addition English academic arguments seem polite and it avoid to be aggressive. It could be said that there is a relationship between traditional culture and language
