Princess Diana at the time of her death was arguably the world’s most renowned celebrity. Privately, Diana felt she was just an ordinary person; however, she was much more. She was known to be an advocate for the helpless and the hopeless. Diana’s influence was felt worldwide through her vast humanitarian activities, which consisted of working with and starting many charities. Diana used her royal title and her celebrity to raise awareness about many forgotten or overlooked causes. As a result of her worldwide travels, Diana became the people’s princess and the public was intrigued with her devotion, consideration, and graciousness. Diana’s wide and profound influence is seen in how popular Elton John’s tribute song “Candle in the Wind” was. In fact, according to Recording Industry Association of America, it became the best-selling single of all time (RIAA). Elton John united the world’s feelings of loss in his song “Candle in the Wind,” and though his purpose was generally ineffective, through his use of diction, imagery, and emotional tone he was able to speak for a world that lost its princess. Elton John captivates his audience through the use of strong diction and mind-arousing words in “Candle in the Wind,” notably by using words such as “rose” (line 1, 33, 37), “called out” (line 5), “whispered” (line 6), and “torch” (line 19). These words engage the audience because people have an understanding of their meaning. “Rose” (line 1, 33, 37) is often symbolized with love, beauty, and royalty. Janet’s presence alone is iconic. She has left an unforgettable impression on the music industry as a whole. Her music has affected fans and music lovers all around the world. Her influence is simply not a question it is a salutation to a musical icon that has embedded her legacy into musical history.
Throughout the life of Emily Grierson, she remains locked up, never experiencing love from anyone but her father. She lives a life of loneliness, left only to dream of the love missing from her life. The rose from the title symbolizes this absent love. It symbolizes the roses and flowers that Emily never received, the lovers that overlooked her.
Alice Walker’s “Roselily”, when first read considered why she decided to use third person. Especially when the story is in such a private line of thought, but then after my second time reading the story I decided that Roselily would not be a strong enough woman to speak about the social injustices that have happened to her. One key part of the story is her new life she will be facing after she is married in Chicago, while comparing it with her old life she is leaving in Mississippi. In Chicago she will no longer have a job, but instead be a homemaker where she will be responsible for the children and home. Also, in Chicago she will become a Muslim because it is what her new husband will want her to be, but back in Mississippi she was of the Christian faith. One of the more positive outcomes of her marriage is that she will go from extreme poverty, to not having to worry about money on a day to day basis.
Aretha Franklin is a well known pop, R&B, and gospel singer. She has been nicknamed “The Queen of Soul” and is an internationally known artist and a symbol of pride in the African American community. Her popularity soared in 1967 when she released an album containing songs “I Never Loved a Man”, “Respect”, and “Baby I Love You.” Throughout her career she has achieved fifteen Grammy Awards, Lifetime Achievement Award, National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Legend Awards, and many Grammy Hall of Fame Awards. In 1987 she became the first woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Time magazine chose her as one of the most influential artists and entertainers of the 20th century. She sang at Dr. Martin Luther King’s funeral and at former President Bill Clinton’s inaugural party. Although she has all these accomplishments and awards there are other reasons that have driven Franklin to fame and landed her on the front cover of Time magazine on June 28, 1968. The reasons I believe allowed Aretha Franklin to become so successful are the following: Her family’s involvement with religion, the inspiring people that surrounded her, and the pain she suffered.
Whitney Houston is considered one of the greatest singers of our generation. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, she holds the record of being the most rewarded female artist of all time. I chose her as my topic, because she represents resiliency and tenacity, despite her troubled experiences with drugs and her personal life. Whitney Houston comes from a family with an amazing, musical pedigree; her mother, Cissy Houston, was a successful back-up singer for Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley. Dionne Warwick is her first cousin, and Aretha Franklin is her godmother.
Concerning the contextualization of A Rose of Family as a sign of the times of women at that point, where cultural norms of women lead to a life in domestication. The recognition of the rose here as it is carefully placed in the title of the piece as well bears significance to the physical rose and what it meant to the young women in the South during the 1800s (Kurtz 40). Roses are generally given as tokens of love and affection by males to females. There are even remnants of it today where young lads also profess their love to women with roses; women still see it as an act of endearment towards them.
Following the concept of love, according to Sherri Sheridan, author of Developing Digital Short Films, objects, sounds, colors and words can all be symbolic of love. Princess Diana helped with many illnesses. Some examples of illnesses she helped face were Cancer and Cystic Fibrosis.(Brennan,p.89) She visited many hospitals such as St Mary’s Hospital in London 1989 and the Great Ormond street hospital in 1991.(Brennan page 87) Diana also helped make a difference in the world through charitable causes. One charitable cause Princess Diana focused on was homelessness this was especially rare in that time period for members of the royal family. Not only did she help with homelessness though, she also helped with drug abuse issues and planned charitable missions to help people with Leprosariums in Nigeria and Indonesia. Elton john has been claimed “the Liberace of rock and roll” (8) for his spectacular show of music, imagery, outward flamboyancy and artistic passion. Originally born Reginald (Reggie) Kenneth Dwight, Elton Hercules John started his first band at 14 (2) and has continued to set a foundation for American pop music for 53 years. Elton’s music is distinctive in its ability to draw attention of listeners with his original combination of sound (2). The songs written both by Elton and lyricist, Bernie Taupin (3) were premeditated to give both a rhythm and undertones of sentimental value. The decline of rock and roll in America allowed for Elton john to succeed.
The roses in the garden are something the serving-man remarks on “roses occasionally suffer from black spot . . . It is always advisable to purchase goods with guarantees…” (Aldiss 450) Here Teddy reports directly to the need for replacement of such false reality in order to omit imperfections. The rose is initiated earlier as a symbol for Monica, when she plucks one and shows it to David, and at the end he picks one as a reminder of her. Dark clouds covered the sky like water covering the ocean. Boom! Thunder roared in the distance. Drip! Drip! Drip! Rain ferociously banged against the ground. The atmosphere was a quite mouse except for the rain. Clouds covered the stars, but the moon summoned a faint beam of light down on the forest. Fire raged in the rose’s head. The male rose wanted freedom from the field and to run like a human. However, while he was wishing that, NASA reported an extremely giant asteroid heading towards Colorado Springs in 3 days. An hour later, Jhonny Appleseed was coming to plant a small apple plant when suddenly the male rose stretched out his roots and using the energy of the soil; he pulled the apple plant out of the pot and threw the plant out of site. He used his roots to jump inside the pot. Jhonny Appleseed ran after him, but the plant made four holes in the pot, two for his branches to use as arms in addition to using two holes for his roots as legs. Using the unlimited energy of the soil, he ran faster than a bullet train (literally), outrunning Jhonny Appleseed in nanoseconds.
The rose is very fragile and needs constant care. Love is not a matter of choice; it is a matter of consequence; indeed, it is a matter of survival. Men must learn to love one another or expire. Love is what gives life meaning. The little prince's love for his rose is so important to him that his love gives the author's life purpose and direction.
Over 2 billion people around the world watched the service. Elton John performed a version of “Candle in the Wind” specially written in the princess’ honor. The song became the highest-selling single of the modern era. All of England mourned her death, everyone from her ex mother in law, to the poor people she spent most of her life helping. Many years after her death, the many criticisms of royal protocol were dismissed.
