There is a lot to learn about Elder-Beerman Store Corporation. While doing this research there was a lot of historical information that was unknown to me. However, learning about Elder-Beerman was truly an eye opener for me. Hopefully, this would be conveyed as the reader continues to be enlightened during their reading of this research paper. Elder-Beerman was not only an iconic corporation it had a lot of history attached to its name alone. There were some ownership regarding the company and how the name came to life and the rise and fall of the corporation. During the first resection in the early 1900, this company continued to thrive and make individuals lives rewarding by having reasonable pricing of their merchandise. The owners focused on catering to their public by addressing their needs and demands. First, it would be discussed how the company came into existence. Secondly, the devastation the company experienced and in conclusion what inevitably happened to the company.

Russell Johnston, William Hunter and Thomas Elder all worked as traveling salesmen for an eastern retail firm called Jordan, Marsh and Company. They founded the company in 1883, after scouting the Dayton retail environment the three partners purchased all the stock relating to Elder-Beerman. Their first advertisement logo was “To present to the public good, dependable merchandise at sensible prices.” (Funding University). The business continued to thrive so much that they needed to relocate. They moved to the Reibold Building in 1896 and known as the Elder and Johnston Company in 1911.

Russell Johnston died and William Hunter, Jr. retired leaving Thomas Elder to run the company until his death in 1936. Thomas Elder had a son who ran the company...

Elder-Beerman then bought another three more stores R.H. Macy and Company in 1985 in the Toledo, Ohio area. The business continued to thrive. Although the company had adopted a policy of avoiding larger urban markets beginning in the early 1980’s, it entered Toledo with the assurance that it would begin as the city’s number two department store in terms of volume (Funding University).
