The Effects ofTeen Pregnancy in Teenagers

1486 Words3 Pages

Did you know three out of ten girls in the United States will get pregnant before the age of 20? Or that eight out of ten fathers don’t stay with the mother (“Teen Pregnancy”)? About 750,000 girls from the age of fifteen to nineteen years old get pregnant every year (Suellentrop). Teen pregnancy is a big issue and needs to be addressed, and can maybe even be prevented. Pregnancy among teens not only affects the lives of the parents, but also the child’s life in a negative way. Finishing high school is important for girls and their babies’ future, and there are many ways to find help and finish school. Plus, having a baby while being a teen can set back their child academically and socially by putting them a couple of steps behind everyone else. Having a baby will not make the father stay. Many teen girls want to get pregnant in hopes that the father of their baby will stay with them to take care of the baby (Suellentrop). The majority of fathers don’t stay with the mother and their baby. This also sets back the baby because they grow up without both parents, and raising a child while being a single parent isn’t easy. Plus, for a baby boy growing up without a father would be hard because he will not have that man to look up to and could potentially be made fun of for it. Watching shows about other pregnant teens opens up the eyes of young teens, showing them the reality of having a baby. It also opens up conversations about relationships, sex and love. These shows have a positive effect on the teens that watch them. Knowing the options teen parents have, can help them succeed in life. Therefore, teen parents should consider finishing high school and fulfilling their dreams to their best ability, even with a child.
