Teenagers are often looked down upon because of the choices they make during that time of their life, but mostly it is because of people looking down upon them, that they make those choices. During Teenager years being exposed to sex, drugs, and alcohol is the norm and because of that substance abuse is often a problem. Seeing a strong correlation between teenager and substance abuse is very common and this paper shows: why teenagers attract to substance abuse, the effects on the teenager life because of the substance abuse and what could be done to prevent the substance abuse. Some ways the family can help the teen is to take it seriously. One of the most important things you can do is to talk openly with the teen about the problem. Urge him or her to do the same. Do not use harsh, judging words because this can cause a hostile fight which will just push the teen away from the family more. The family has to be as supportive as you can during this time. (Healthwise Staff) The Teen parents should have adequate supervision of the teen to and check to see if he hanging out with the right crowd. If the problem is very serious then the teen might need to see a counselor or psychologist. Friends can help with a teen substance abuse as much as the teen family could. The friend of the teen should not try to pressure him or her into drugs. They should stay by their side and be their when the teen need them in hard times, so they will not have to rely on drugs or alcohol. If the friend sees the problem before anyone else see it, then he or she should report the problem to someone who could help; if that friend really did care for the teen. The teen should prevent substance abuse by knowing what group to hand around to prevent peer pressure into doing alcohol or drug abuse. If the teen is feeling depressed then he or she need to find a way to make themselves feel better without drugs and alcohol, like music, sports, or just talking to a
