The Effects of Globalization on Cambodia

Globalization is defined as the act of creating connections between countries across the globe in terms of culture and economy. Almost on every part of the world, citizens have become a part of the global village. Even though various researches stated that there are negative effects of globalization for particular reasons, the positive impacts were clearly shown to be stronger especially in developing countries such as Cambodia. To begin with, tourist travel is one of the main negative impacts of Globalization as it is able pose a serious threat on the society as a whole through the act of human trafficking. According to an article on Iris Cambodia, the fastest growing criminal industry across the globe is no doubt: human trafficking. Millions of human beings are being forced to do labor activities such as domestic service or industrial work and some are forced to get involved in sex tourism. The study shows that Cambodia is known to be one of the top destinations in the sex industry. ("What is human trafficking", 2012) Globalization in tourism has not only contributed to harmful effects to the society but to the environment as well. Every year, thousands of passengers travel around the world by airplanes whether for vacation, business purposes or any other occasion. This use of air travel results in massive amounts of carbon dioxide to be released into the earth’s atmosphere annually. What is more, tourism also produces a lot of pollution through littering, noise and emissions of road traffic in many areas. Another negative effect is the merging and interaction between cultures. When those cultures become globalized, their chances of facing loss of tradition and culture will be extremely high. Nevertheless, it is believed that globalization should continue to be promoted in the future while actions should be taken in order to solve the negative impacts of it as well. In order to differentiate between leisure and tourism it should be recognised that leisure often involves activities enjoyed during an individual’s free time, whereas tourism commonly refers to organised touring undertaken on a commercial basis. Development in the two areas could be attributed to changing patterns in working lives within the last four decades. Generally, people now have more disposable wealth, work shorter hours, receive longer, paid annual leave, retire earlier and have greater personal mobility. In addition, according to Marshall & Wood (1995), the growth of the tourist industry per se can be associated, in part, with the concentration of capital; the emergence of diversified leisure based companies, sometimes within wider corporate conglomerates and often associated with particular airlines. Furthermore, the development of tourism can generate employment both directly, in jobs created in the hotels, restaurants etc, and indirectly, through expenditure on goods and services in the local area. Nevertheless, although the tourist industry is competitive, which essentially keeps down the cost of foreign travel, the success of tourism in any one area can be ‘influenced by weather, changing consumer tastes, demographics, economic cycles, government policy, not to mention international terrorism and other forms of conflict.’(1) Although such factors may have a detrimental affect on the economy of a popular tourist destination (or even tourism in general, in light of September 11th 2001), the consequence of tourism in general is often three fold: environmental, social and cultural, which in turn has prompted a search for new ‘friendly’ approaches that are less destructive.
