Does the Environment of a Child Impact Their Development? There are many different aspects of environment that can affect the development of children. One major environmental impact that influences the development of a child is the neighborhood they are raised in. Within the neighborhood there are several other aspect of influence. Where a child is raised can affect their behavior, attitudes, emotions, personality, values, health, and so much more. This can be seen in their personal lives at home to their social lives around others in classrooms. The affects of a child’s development due to their environment can be seen in both a positive and negative aspect. The neighborhood that a child is raised in can be very critical in their development. It may have a significant effect on what he or she becomes in the future. If a child is raised in a good neighborhood they are likely to be raised well. Children in a good environment are likely to have a better attitude and behavior. Especially when it comes to schooling. They will do well in school and those school systems are likely to have a higher rate of graduating children and children who actually take their education seriously. Better neighborhoods are known to lead to higher test scores. Making sure that a child has a safe, clean, peaceful and comforting environment is necessary and important for your child’s development. Growing up in a bad neighborhood where children aren’t putting school as a main priority and concerned about getting a good education may rub off on a child as they follow one another not put there education first. Neighborhoods are comprised of communities of people who are closely related by either birth, heritage, clan, culture, tribe, or ethnic identity or language. Neighborhoods arose due to humanistic natural desires to socialize, associate and form relationships with others humans. The formation of a neighborhood is done to preserve their unique sense of identity, culture, cherished traditions, and common values. However, affordability is a huge element in determining the type of neighborhood a person might live, grow up and rear children. Choosing a neighborhood that will help foster positive, healthy children’s development is very important. As stated before, a neighborhood plays an important factor in the upbringing of children and youths. Living in a poverty stricken neighborhood has negative consequences such as a lower educational achievement and a higher chance of committing crimes. The wealth concentrated in affluent neighborhoods stays in the neighborhood and are rarely spreaded to areas in poverty. Children growing up in poorer neighborhoods are not given the same opportunities as children growing up in well-of neighborthoods to gain a higher education because of the resources that are offered. As a result, poor socioeconomic areas remain the same over time because of the lack of resources introduced into the area.
When kids are raised on this setting, where they see informal rules as the norm, they become familiar with it and see it as inspirational (Anderson, 1994). Inspirational in the sense that they see these adults that don’t work, but still survive and have money to spend. Therefore they might come to the conclusion that school is not necessary. Neighbors can have an impact on students’ views when it comes to their future. All of these factors show that the environment around adolescents can either positively affect them or negatively affect them. The environment can positively affect adolescents by supporting the child and acknowledging that they can achieve what they want. The environment can negatively affect the adolescents by not giving up its own time to help the adolescents or ignoring any small achievements that they may make.
Correspondingly, these poor urban neighborhoods can lead to less effective parenting due to the stress and struggles they are facing, which may cause adolescents to develop delinquent behaviors. Due to the high crime rates in such neighborhood, adolescents are more likely to be exposed to deviant peer groups and gang behaviors, and these may result in a stronger deviant peer effect on the adolescents. However, the environment also plays a strong role in the modeling of a child’s behavior too. A child is influenced not only by the elements of their environment, but also by the actions of their peers and family members within their environment. Repeated exposure to undesirable behaviors of peers and family members will begin to “rub off” on a child. It’s always best to try to set a good example for all children because they are very impressionable.

While we all have a lifetime to develop varying aspects of ourselves, it is the childhood period that is the most important in acquiring many tools. The strongest and the longest environment to affect the child are the parents. Most parents consider it their responsibility as well as the privilege to provide the best possible environment favorable to child's physical growth. However, often they tend to forget about the behavioral aspect in a child's development. The more a parent knows about the changes that take place in a child's behavior when he grows up, the more successful they can be in guiding the child along the complicated path leading to maturity. The distinction between nature versus nurture or even environment versus heredity leads to the question of: does the direct environment or the nature surrounding an adolescent directly influence acts of delinquency, later progressing further into more radical crimes such as murder or psychotic manifestation, or is it directly linked to the hereditary traits and genes passed down from that individual adolescent’s biological parents? To answer this question one must first understand the difference between nature, nurture, environment, and heredity. Nurture, broken down further into environment, is defined as various external or environmental factors one is exposed to which can be more specifically broken down into social and physical aspects. Nature, itself broken down into heredity, is defined as the genetics and the individual characteristics in one’s personality or even human nature.

Early childhood most often refers to the months and years between infancy and school age children. Child development is influenced by a lot of factors. In my opinion, Brooks-Gunn’s argument that the aspects of your environment influences your development is a valid one. In my neighborhood, my peers were wonderful. Before I met them, I would typically just stay inside and watch television or play video games, and when I became friends with them, they would convince me to withdraw from my house to play with them daily. Child development is study and research on children from conception to age 20. There are many different factors in defining what and why a child does something. For example if a mother has a disease or toxin while pregnant that causes damage to her fetus, this can affect the child’s abilities to properly develop. With my daughter being born at 26 gestational weeks I knew her chances of being delayed mentally, cognitively and physically, were greater than a child being born at full term. Family is another factor when looking at a child’s development. Did the child come from a blended family, a nuclear family or is the child living with relatives? These are all questions we as teaches and facilitators need to be aware of when evaluating a child. We also need to be aware of the child’s economic status.
