Do mermaids really exist? This is a question that many have asked over the years but never really took the time to try and find out. I personally believe the existence of mermaids is definitely possible, especially considering the fact that the world has only explored five percent of our oceans. Scientists discover new sea creature species every single day but many still try to argue the fact that everything about mermaids is simply a myth. There are plenty of odd creatures we have discovered in the oceans, so why do people think it’s so ridiculous that the existence of mermaids could be possible?
Another question many tend to ask is; what is a mermaid? There are so many different ideas and opinions as to what the appearance of a mermaid actually looks like. The word mermaid itself is made of two parts; the first being the word Mer, which means sea, and maid referring to a female. There is also a male version of a mermaid called a merman. Basically, a mermaid is a creature that is half human, half fish. They have the torso of a fish and the upper body of a human being. Technically there are still two legs but these have become fused into a single tail covered in a thick scale-covered skin. Mermaids are said to grow to a length of about five and half feet and a top weight of 125 pounds. Mermaids are usually considered to be very beautiful, and extremely attractive in looks, but this is only a presumption. The actual appearance of a mermaid is nothing like the assumptions most have, and to many it may actually be considered repulsive (suddenlink.net).
Mermaids have a very interesting yet unusual life. The life span of a mermaid is an average of thirty years. The reason for their short lives is their rapid heartbeat, which is trip...

...impossible has to do with the skin (DoubleXScience.org). The human skin of the creature would become extremely damaged from various things. Such as being submerged in saltwater non-stop and constantly being exposed to the sun. These are several of the significant justifications given as to why the existence of mermaids is absurd to many people.
The existence of mermaids has been - and most likely always will be - a very controversial and inconclusive topic. After carrying out extensive research and investigating the matter in depth, I have a better understanding from each side. Many of the speculations provide different reasons justifying the perspectives of each position. I have concluded the possibility that mermaids exist is not as ridiculous as the average uninformed person may assume. The problem simply is that people don’t like what they can’t understand.
Low oxygen consumption rates were reported in this study, most likely due to the low standard metabolic rates of the nurse sharks. The nurse sharks also had a lower routine metabolic rate compared to other species which was attributed to their slower swimming speeds. Metabolic rate increased with temperature. The cost of transport was lower than is found in other species. This was attributed to the nurse sharks inactivity and less streamlined body. The cost of activity is high compared to other shark species. This means that nurse sharks have a higher metabolic cost of activity when switching from rest to movement. The difference in values found in nurse sharks as compared to other species is attributed to their less streamlined

Sharks have also been subjected to medical research, games and competitions, jewellery, souvenirs and cosmetics. We need to take into consideration that sharks play a vital role in the natural world that we live in. it is imperative that we look after these majestic creatures and ensure they remain protected. We need to be aware of the dangers of sharks, swim in protected areas where there are shark nets, and do not swim after dark in the sea (especially not alone) as the sea is the sharks home. Humans should also be wearing wet suits as protection in the ocean. The sea is where they live, they swim freely and they eat – they do not particularly target humans but rather prey on food that is available to them in their habitat.
“In life, sharks are very flexible. Even hammerheads and large ocean sharks are quite flexible,” Lauder said. “If you watch a shark swim, the head does not move very much, so it could be that the denticles on the head are mostly reducing drag, but those on the tail are enhancing thrust. But we don’t know what that balance may be. Ultimately, though, one of the key messages of this paper is that shark skin needs to be studied when they’re moving, which hadn’t been done before.”
Under the sea, in an idyllic and beautiful garden, stands a statue of a young man cut out of cold stone – for the Little Mermaid who knows nothing but the sea, the statue stands as an emblem of the mysterious over-world, a stimulus for imagination and sexual desire, an incentive for expansion of experience, and most predominately, an indication that something great and all-encompassing is missing from her existence. Traces of curiosity and a vague indication of the complexities of adult desires mark the child mermaid; in such a stage of development, the statue will suffice. However, as the Little Mermaid reaches puberty, the statue must allegorically come alive in order to parallel the manifestation of her new-found adult desires – the statue must become a prince in his world of adulthood above the sea. Thus, powered by an insistent and ambiguous longing for self-completion, the Little Mermaid embarks on a journey of self-discovery, and, to her ultimate misfortune, prematurely abandons her child-like self as sexual lust and the lust for an adult life takes hold of her.
Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” tells the story of a young mermaid Ariel, who wishes to live on land with her love, Prince Eric. She learns from a sea witch, Ursula that the only way she will be able to do that is if she is given legs. (Livingston18) In return for her voice, Ursula agrees to grant her legs but ultimately tricks Ariel by telling her if she does not kiss the prince after three days then she will belong to Ursula. (Livingston18) In the end, Prince Eric kills Ursula and marries Ariel. Unlike Euripides’ Medea, the director’s of the Disney movie chose to create a physical appearance that failed to comply with society’s expectations in order to create the ideal image of a woman. In the movie,...
Everyone who's born has come from the sea. Your mother's womb is just a sea in small. And birds come of seas in eggs. Horses lie in the sea before they're born. The placenta is the sea. And your blood is the sea continued in your veins. We are the ocean--walking on the land. (117)
In both Hans Christian Andersons “The Little Mermaid,” and Disney’s version of the story, the main character— a young and beautiful mermaid— waits anxiously for her fifteenth birthday to venture from her father’s underwater castle to the world above the water. As the story carries on the mermaids priorities change; her modest and selfless nature is revealed towards the end in Andersen’s version. However, Disney’s version encompasses a rather shallow ending and plot throughout. The theme found in comparing the two versions reveal that Andersen’s substance trumps Disney’s entertainment factor in fairy tales.
Mermaids, Fairies, and Witches are some of the most prominent mythical characters in today’s entertainment. These creatures are common characters in Folklore from various countries around the world. Folklore from other countries and cultures often affects how authors portray these creatures in the movies, books, and TV shows that are familiar to the citizens of America. One such country is Scotland, which is filled with multitudes of different folk stories. Scottish Folklore in particular has many tales about these three well known creatures. The most commonly known folklore from Scotland has had a huge impact on some of the most well known entertainment in the United States today.
The Mysterious Giant Squid About 80 percent of the Earth is covered in water. With the majority of life on this planet residing in the liquid we like to call the essence of life, we as humans represent a minority on this planet. Much of the underwater world remains a mystery to us, with the giant squid being one of the greatest mysteries of them all. How close are we to actually solving the mystery of this deep water giant? For the first known citation of one of these creatures, you would have to go back to November of 1861, when crew members of the French dispatch steamer Alecton spotted what appeared to be a large sea monster off the coast of the Canary Islands.

The purpose of this essay is to apply the feminist framework to the film The Little Mermaid (1989) in order to deconstruct Disney. First, I will provide a textual description of The Little Mermaid (1989), explaining the film's plot line. Then, I will describe my analytical framework, the feminist framework, using Ott and Mack (2010) and additional media related studies. Next, I will give an in depth analysis of The Little Mermaid (1989), using the feminist framework and several additional sources. Finally, I will give a brief conclusion, providing an...
Mysterious things can occur or be found in any body of water, and many have yet to be discovered. Heaps of mysteries have been left unsolved, such as unresolved sunken ships, and there are many undiscovered species in both freshwater and saltwater. Although a freshwater environment is always changing, and there is always something new to discover and learn, saltwater is more mysterious. Salt bodies of water such as oceans are so deep, and there are so many undiscovered species amongst the depths and the darkness.
The African Culture portrays the idea of mermaids in different perspectives across the continent. Mermaids in Africa are observed to have specific similar features across the regions. Typical research in African Mythology describe mermaid as an attractive, mystic and dangerous woman who shrouds herself with a vengeance. In western regions of Africa, she is commonly referred to as Mami Wata while the Eastern Regions she is known as Mamba Muntu. She is designated as an attractive and lovely woman with an angelic stare and flowing lovely black hair which she uses to bewilder human beings. Her is purpose is to intrigue, seduce and beguile her spectator. Nevertheless, she transcends how humanity perceives the reality of metaphysical, especially
There is really no evidence that mermaids exist so they probably do not. Anyone can choose what they want to believe about mermaids but without actual proof of anything that anyone has seen, it is hard to believe anything. Pictures and videos can be easily altered so people never know if they are seeing what truly happened. If mermaids do exist, they have probably been hiding themselves for a reason. If mermaids do exist, they have surely done a great job concealing it.
