Your learning style is your mind’s own unique way of taking in and processing information for you to obtain. No one learns and communicates in the same way. When working with different people we have to make sure we think about the fact that there are different learning styles as well as different personality types. The only way for a small group of individuals to communicate effectively, we need to identify each member’s learning style and personality types from the start so that the team can function in a timely and well-respected manner. Upon determining each other’s learning style, we can identify the strengths and weaknesses of each individual and can help each other achieve our accomplishments towards promoting academic success. Upon determining each other’s personality style we can start to focus on ways to effectively communicate and collaborate within our group. I have selected to cover 3 of the eight types of learning styles which are, the verbal linguistic, the musical and the interpersonal. I am also going to cover three personality types, the thinker, the organizer and the giver.
To start off the first learning style I will talk about is the verbal linguistic. The verbal learning style learns best when they are taught using spoken words or written materials. This learning style refers to a person’s ability to reason, solve problems, and learn using language. They are well spoken, retain information, and can easily convince you to see things through their eyes. The most convenient way to utilize this individual is to have them teach, motivate and mentor the group. They can also be the one to present and talk about the project. They are knowledgeable about the material and the research used.
The second learning style will be the musical. Music plays a large role in their lives. They learn and think in patterns, rhythms and sound. They prefer to study in environments that offer familiar sounds, which may offer cues for remembering. This will be the one in the group you will always see humming or tapping their fingers on the table during an exam or at lunch. In a group, the most convenient way to utilize this individual’s learning style is to allow the individual to gather data needed for the project.
The interpersonal learner can communicate both verbally and non-verbally. They work well in a group setting.
A human’s capacity to learn new skills has been researched and studied over the years. Each individual is unique and therefore hard to put into one simple category. Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences is one example of the possible ways a human can learn and comprehend their world. In his theory, Gardner has described 8 different capacities of learning ability. In applying his theory, personalized education could be created to tailor to each individual’s needs.
And there is a four-type definition of learning styles: 1. Accommodators (CE/AE) 2. Divergers (CE/RO) 3. Assimilators (AC/RO) 4. Convergers (AC/AE)
Their hypothesis posits that there should be a correlation between a person’s preferred learning style and their corresponding level of learning. They premised their research on the assumption that “sound” evidence requires robust documentation from properly designed experiments, including appropriate control and treatment groups and a statistically significant difference between these groups. In other words, they set out to confirm whether certain instructional methods proved more effective for students with one specific “learning style” over another. Their research indicated that both children and adults express preferences about how information is presented to them and that people differ in the extent to which they have a preference for different ways of thinking and processing information. However, in their research there was no evidence for any correlation between one preferred learning style over another, thus failing the conditions for their hypothesis. Furthermore, in their review of literature they found very little in the way of experimental studies on the topic of learning styles despite the enormous amount of research supporting the concept. Therefore, their conclusion was that there is not adequate evidence justifying learning style preference. The purpose of the Myers-Biggs Type Indicator personality type is to make the philosophy of psychological indicators defined by C.G Jung comprehensible and beneficial to people. On the other hand, several people realize that every individual prefers diverse learning styles and methods, which is the common way of learning. According to Howard Gardner, to lengthen the learning ability of people, more cognizance needs to be given to different learning style that people will prefer to receive data. Wow! I have a personal learning style! If I had given any thought to my learning style prior to this course, I would have said simply, “Some things are easy for me to learn, and some things are not.” Now I can say, “I am a grouper, a top-down learner, an owl, in the C-D quadrants, and my strong intelligences are linguistic, intrapersonal, and interpersonal”. What all this means, still, is some things are easy for me to learn, and some things are not. But there I go again, simplifying the matter.

There are seven learning styles and techniques. The first kind of learner is a visual learner also known as a spatial, this is when someone prefers using pictures and images to understand a topic. The aural learner also known as the auditory-musical person, is a person who prefers using music or sound. There is the verbal learner or the linguistic person who prefers using words, both in speech and writing. Next is the physical learner also known as the kinesthetic learner, the preference of this learner would be using the body, hands, and sense of touch to learn. Following that would be the logical thinker or the mathematical person, who prefers using logic, reasoning and systems to learn. The social learner also known as the interpersonal learner is someone who prefers to learn in groups and with other people. This type of learning style can be great for student in the traditional classroom setting. Last there is the solitary learner or the intrapersonal person. This is someone who prefers to work alone and use self-study methods. This type of learner would best be fit in the online classroom setting. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
