Discrimination and Oppression throughout History- Motifs and Reasons
Discrimination and prejudice has accompanied human civilizations since the beginning. Its accompany has generated unethical, morally wrong ideologies and some of which were put in action. It is effortless to define discrimination as a natural interaction between a superior and an inferior force especially when the superior force is imperialistic. Major discriminations through history share similar factors but also show distinct motifs and reasons for such oppressive and discriminatory actions. This is evident in the books 'The Bronze Bow', and 'Year of Impossible Good Byes' (YIG)
'The Bronze Bow' takes place in the thriving times of the vast Roman Empire. It was an era when the Romans were undoubtedly dominant over the entirety of Europe. However, their supremacy was constructed on top of violence and cruelty against those who were conquered. Daniel, the protagonist, lives with craving to avenge his father who was crucified before his eyes by the Romans. Daniel later is involved in resistance movements against the legionnaire, driven with loathe and abhor. 'After my father died I made a vow. Maybe that they would say a boy eight years old couldn't make a vow, a real note that was binding. But I did. I vowed I would pay them back with my whole life. That I would hate them and fight them and kill them. That's all I live for.'(The Bronze Bow, pg. 82-83). This is a statement made by Daniel after telling Joel and Malthace how his father was crucified and it clearly indicates his vexation.

...esistance from the Koreans is by strengthening the amount of force exerted on them. Yet, a connection between the two can be seen. Both of the ruling parties did not show any effort in pacifying the conquered. Both of them didn't realize that even though 'force' , whatever form it is used, is significantly effective for the first few times, loses considerable productiveness gradually.(Unless the amount of exertion constantly grows stronger than the previous, which obviously has its limits.) Their oppressive and discriminatory behavior eventually led to their downfall and a lesson is found. A genuine vanquish and triumph is acquired only when the superior force earns respect and admiration from the conquered. But, we also realize that this goes the same for social relationships. And it is now time for people and nations to 'truly' conquer what needs to be conquered.
Oppression signifies an authority of a dominant group over a monitory group, disengaging the minority group from society. “ The term oppression encapsulates the fusion of institutional and systemic discrimination, personal bias, bigotry and social prejudice in a complex web of relationships and structures that shade most aspects of life in our society” (Bell, 2007). In one way or another every individuals experience some form of oppression, whether it be through, sex, gender, religion, age, economic status and/or sexual orientation. In some instances, an “individual may experience multiple oppression and they can be experienced simultaneously or singularly depending on the context” ( Vernon). For, an example as an African American who also
For at least three decades race, gender and biopower have all been linked together. The three terms used, are frameworks installed by governments to manage the population by categorizing, regulating and controlling its subjects. Race, gender and biopower are intertwined to illuminate the treatment of the minority for centuries. The mistreatment, discrimination and suffering experienced by the minorities throughout history is evident in the texts provided.
Discrimination based on race, gender, class, and culture has been reoccurring since the beginning stages of mankind. Discrimination can derive from several different factors, whether sexual identity, race, gender, social-class as this paper demonstrated. The purpose of the paper was to discuss how discrimination was locked to institutional power between 1600s and 1990s, but even today discrimination is very prevalent and will continue to be, as the criminal justice system and the war on drugs acts as a form of discrimination towards people of color. Discrimination based on race, sexual ideologies and practices, and social class seem to still be very prevalent, while discrimination based on gender seems to have left the publics view.
Prejudice and discrimination have been ubiquitous throughout human history, so the battle against them seems to have no end. Most people believe that there is an inverse relationship between education and prejudice which indicates the higher education may increase the tolerance; that would wipe out prejudice. Although education plays such an important role, it is considered as one of various efforts to fight against prejudice and discrimination. In other words, it would be challenging and difficult for education to be alone in the battle of curing the world of prejudice and discrimination.
For centuries, racism has become the universal epitome of culture, despite the efforts of various civilizations, such as the Western and European to combat these indifferences among people. A race is specific social group that can be differentiated through various ways, from facial features and hair textures, to social norms and habits that constitutes to that group. These differences contribute to our uniqueness and humanity. Because people can be grouped by any number of differences, Man, lead by his ignorance, perpetuated the issue once social-hierarchies began to develop, splitting society to its various groups. As a result, social disparity from one’s upbringing became the common tendency to look down, or look up at people of other cultures, skin-colors, or nationalities. Discrimination and unjust social practices affect humanity today.
„No consideration of cultural and/or racial difference should ever neglect the sheer negativity, evil and inferiority with which „the other“ of such differences has been associated throughout history“ (Dollimore 18) .
1 a : the act of discriminating b : the process by which two stimuli differing in some aspect are responded to differently
Through ages, people used to detach themselves from the meaning of common dignity. They have been looking for ways to make themselves look important. They have created classes and used to look down to people who differ from them. People usually involve the idea that one’s own race is more pre-eminent therefore, he has the right to control others. If we take the United States of America as an example, we will find that many Negros has suffered from discrimination. They were deprived from their civil, social, political and educational rights. There were many cases in which African Americans have been discriminated from white people but Martin Luther king tried to stop this racism. Discrimination and racism were not only restricted to African Americans in the US but also it has extended to Egypt and many other countries all over the world. In Egypt, there is a lot of dominations that suffer from discrimination like Nubians for example. Although they are Egyptians, but Nubians are not treated in the same way as other Egyptian up till now.

Racism and discrimination has been an important issue in United States history. Racism has been used in different ways, from slavery to segregation. The issue of gun control has also been an important discussion throughout history. In the article Racism, Gun Ownership and Gun Control: Biased Attitudes in US Whites May Influence Policy Decisions by Kerry O’Brien, Walter Forrest, Dermot Lynott, and Michael Daly, the authors conduct an experiment on the issues of racism, gun ownership, and gun control. The authors conducted a quantitative study to explore “whether racism is related to gun ownership and opposition to gun control in US whites.” (O'Brien, K., Forrest, W., Lynott, D., & Daly, M. (2013, October). Racism, Gun Ownership and Gun Control:
Racial Discrimination, and Oppression and are still major problems in society. Many great historical leaders such as; Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X , and more have fought for the end of racism and oppression yet it lingers like stray dog. Many times when people mention racism and oppression they overlook it, as though it weren’t a real issue in the world today. Ending racial discrimination and oppression is exceedingly important although we are of different race, sex, and language we have the same color blood and we’re human with emotions. The ending of racial discrimination and oppression, could lead to less suicides due to suicides, poverty, unemployment, and uneducated individuals. The information I will be presenting in this critical
In the world today, racism and discrimination is one of the major issues being faced with. Racism has existed throughout the world for centuries and has been the primary reasons for wars, conflicts, and other human calamities all over the planet. It has been a part of America since the European colonization of North America beginning in the 17th century. Many people are not aware of how much racism still exist in our schools, workforces, and anywhere else that social lives are occurring. It started from slavery in America to caste partiality in India, down to the Holocaust in Europe during World War II.
In this paper I will discuss what happens when we allow biases and prejudice to affect our actions toward others. I will then conclude my paper with what we can do to prevent or eliminate discrimination.
Discrimination towards minority groups based on their race, gender, and sexual orientation has existed in our society for decades. Till this day these stereotypes and prejudice towards an individual’s race, sexuality, ethnicity, and background still exist. There are particular barriers such as activities and interactions with people occurring daily, as well as plenty of disadvantages for those from different cultural backgrounds other than white. The term racism comes to mind when an individual draws negative thoughts about others due to their biological characteristics. Peggy McIntosh lists a number of conditions in her essay, White privilege, pointing out how her group in other words the advantage of being white protects her from racial
