In today's times, it is possible for a deaf family to characterize themselves as an all American family. For many centuries hearing people classified deafness as a horrendous misfortune. As reported by a historian at the University of Iowa, Doug Baynton, in the early 1800's most of the deaf people in America lived in segregated rural areas from one another, and with little communication with the people around them. “They also had a limited understanding of what they could do – of their own possibilities. The movie “Audism Unveiled” was a very interesting and powerful movie. I never realized that deaf individuals are discriminated against. This could be partly because I have never been immersed in or educated about the deaf culture until this year. One of the things that struck me the most while watching “Audism Unveiled” was the many heart wrenching stories about children being unable to communicate with their own non-signing hearing families.. The deaf child would have to ask their family members, why everyone was laughing or what’s going on. The family members would just tell them “I’ll tell you later” or “Nevermind. It’s not important”, resulting in the individual feeling isolated. Personally, I agree with people saying that if a parent has a deaf child they should learn how to sign; communication is what brings families together. As a result, the most intriguing thing to me was the stories of family members never learning American Sign Language; leaving their family member isolated.
Mark Drolsbaugh, the author of Deaf Again, was born to deaf parents at a time when the deaf population didn’t have and weren’t given the same availability to communication assistance as they have today. He was born hearing and seemed to have perfect hearing up until the first grade when he started having trouble understanding what was being said but was too young to understand what was happening. Rachel Kolb was born profoundly deaf to hearing parents who were committed to being able to effectively communicate with her. Rachel received 18 years of speech therapy and is also able to communicate in sign language; she attributes her communicative success to many of the people who did not believe in her as a child. Rachel’s situation was quite rare, as she pointed out in her discussion that 90% of hearing parents with deaf children do not learn ways to effectively communicate with their children. She points out that children who are deaf face serious deficits in their academic success, social skills and independence but that these deficiencies can be changed if we change the way we think about deafness. She emphasizes the importance of family support and self-belief as the foundation of a therapy plan, and that we must teach people to focus on individual’s abilities rather than their disabilities.
In this book, we read of several different things about the deaf culture. One example is the dislike the deaf people have for cochlear implants being given to deaf children. As stated in our book, the reason why the deaf do not approve of cochlear implants being given to deaf children is because they feel the child should have the opportunity to decide whether they want to be hearing or deaf. Another part of the deaf culture that we learn about in “Train Go Sorry” is that the deaf are very social people. They enjoy being involved in many social events and love to talk with one another.
The documentary of “Through Deaf Eyes” has open my eyes to the deaf culture. The movie has made it “click” that deaf people are just that people and individuals like me. Deaf community has its struggles just like everyone else. They struggle with growing into who they are as a person, harmful situations, and feeling a sense of belonging. They just speak a different language like Italians and Hispanics. Communicating with a different language does not make them lesser than a hearing person. When able to learn to communicate, the deaf are able to learn and gain knowledge just like a hearing person. The only difference is they have to learn more and work harder to achieve their goals and gain knowledge, which a hearing person learns just by hearing their surroundings.

Deaf and hearing impaired individuals are know longer an out cast group. They now have there own deaf community. Deaf individuals do not consider themselves having an impairment, handicap, or any type of disability. They believe that through the use of sign language, other communication skills, and technology that there deafness is the way they are supposed to be. Throughout the course of the semester, I have gained a new understanding and respect of Deaf culture and the many aspects it encompasses. The information supplied in class through discussion, movies, and guest lecturers since the previous reflection have aided in the enhancement of my knowledge of Deaf culture and nicely wrapped up all of the information provided throughout the semester.
In the end, I hope you can understand about Deaf culture. You can see Deaf people have a variety opinions, educations, and those experiences. Most of the time, people thought that Deaf people is common like low level of life. This is not true. I wish, I can information more than this. I am appreciation that two of my Deaf friends are an awesome answer my questions.
American deaf culture is a vibrant, living culture that is very sadly overlooked much of the time. It is very common for people to take the 'pathological approach' to deaf people, which is an approach that views deafness as a problem that must be cured and believes that deaf people should do what they can to fit in with the regular hearing society. However, most deaf people strongly disagree with this approach because they see themselves and their society as a culture. The deaf people in this culture do not view their deafness as a problem and many would refuse a cure if it was offered. Deaf people have their own literature, jokes, stories, language, greetings and really anything that any other culture has.
The professors spent the second half of club meetings discussing social issues facing the Deaf community. While learning ASL at the club meetings, we would spend time discussing various issues facing the Deaf community around the nation. The first in-depth conversations with Mrs. Donna and a few peers was about negative language associated with deaf children and the consequences it can have. When a baby a baby cannot hear the standard protocol is for a doctor or nurse to tell the parents that their child has failed their hearing test. Immediately the word "failed" creates a negative connotation in a parent's head. They start to see their child's disability as a flaw needing to be fixed, rather than a part of who their child is. Deafness itself has historically been viewed as a physical impairment, similar to blindness, and both cognitive and motor impairments. Though today, deafness is considered a trait, not a disability. The debilitating effects of deafness can be helped through hearing aids, cochlear implants, assistive listening devices, and through the ability of speech (and visually reading others lips). Any traits that group members share can be perceived as positive by people in that group. So if deafness is seen as a disability, then people who are deaf carry the stigma of “lacking” a typical human characteristic. Although people in the Deaf Community say they are bound together by deafness, they also say that being deaf is a distinctive perspective on the world.
In mainstream American society, we tend to approach deafness as a defect. Helen Keller is alleged to have said, "Blindness cuts people off from things; deafness cuts people off from people." (rnib.org) This seems a very accurate description of what Keller's world must have been. We as hearing people tend to pity deaf people, or, if they succeed in the hearing world, admire them for overcoming a severe handicap. We tend to look at signing as an inferior substitute for "real" communication. We assume that all deaf people will try to lip-read and we applaud deaf people who use their voices to show us how far they have come from the grips of their disability. Given this climate, many hearing people are surprised, as I was at first, to learn of the existence of Deaf culture. To me deafness is not a defect but a source of connection. Imagine yourself deaf, growing up with a beautiful language, visual literature, humor, and theater. Imagine taking pride in your identity without any desire to become a member of the majority culture. For many deaf people, their community is a comforting relief from the isolation and condescension of the hearing world. However the Deaf community is far more than a support group for people who share a physical characteristic. Members of the Deaf community may have hearing levels that range from profoundly deaf to slightly hard-of-hearing. But no members of the Deaf community are "hearing impaired." Inside this community, deaf people become Deaf, proudly capitalizing their culture. Hearing people suddenly find that they are handicapped: "Deaf-impaired."
