There are many people in the world, but only three key learning styles. Learning styles can be defined as a preferred way of acquiring knowledge and processing information. A learning style affects understanding, solving problems, participating in different activities, reacting in a group, and relating to others around us. Most individuals have a dominant learning style. There are many varieties of learning styles, but they are categorized into three main groups: auditory, visual, and kinesthetic (Lamarche-Bisson):
1. “Auditory learners learn best through verbal lectures, discussions, talking things through and listening to what others have to say. Auditory learners interpret the underlying meanings of speech through listening to tone of voice, pitch, speed and other nuances. Written information may have little meaning until it is heard. These learners often benefit from reading text aloud and using a tape recorder.”
2. “Visual learners learn best through seeing the teacher's body language and facial expression to fully understand the content of a lesson. They tend to prefer sitting at the front of the classroom to avoid visual obstructions (e.g. people's heads). They may think in pictures and learn best from visual displays including: diagrams, illustrated textbooks, overhead transparencies, videos, flipcharts and handouts. During a lecture or classroom discussion, visual learners often prefer to take detailed notes to absorb the information.”

The purpose of this research paper is to examine learning styles theories to determine if teaching students to use their own particular learning style can help ail them in increased educational success. The learning style aspect consists of six key areas including brain processing, sensory modalities, physical needs, environmental preferences, social aspects, and attitudes. Besides the way a person operates, there are two other important factors that play a key role in effecting a person?s learning style. These important factors include each individuals learning patterns and a theory known as multiple intelligences. Individual learning patterns are focused on four main types ES, IN, EN and the IS. The theory of multiple intelligences is based on eight types of intelligences, these include visual/spatial, verbal/linguistic, Logical/mathematical, bodily/kinesthetic, Musical/rhythmic, interpersonal intelligence, and finally naturalist.
One of the ways Pritchard (2008) defines learning styles is “A particular way in which an individual learns” (p. 41). This is the most basic way to describe what learning style is. Since each and every person is different in their own way, they each have a particular way of learning. Luckily the different styles of learning have been identified and can help aid anyone seeking knowledge in advancing their learning style. Learning can be defined as the acquisition of knowledge through different means such as studying or through experience. There exist several ways of learning, and each individual is different in the way through which they learn best. Some of the ways of learning include visualizing, listening, read/write, and through kinesthetic (Nilson, 2010). Visualizing is whereby an individual learns best through diagrams used to represent information that would otherwise be represented through words. Such diagrams include graphs, maps, patterns, or hierarchies. Listening or aural learning, on the other hand, is whereby persons acquire information through listening. Such people are able to learn as a lecturer speaks or through group discussions. In turn, the read/write learning style is whereby an individual is able to acquire information through reading and writing. Finally, kinesthetic is whereby a person learns best through experience and practice such as experiments. The VARK analysis is used to determine which learning style a person gives preference to while learning (Ravenscroft, 2012).

To determine the best way I learn, I carried out two different learning styles questionnaires online. One may find that they are not always categorised in a specific type rather they may have more than one learning preference. Firstly, the most commonly used Neil Fleming’s VARK model. Fleming believes that there are four different types of learner: Visual, Auditory, Reading/writing and Kinesthetic learners. The second model I tried out was Soloman-Felder Learning Styles and Strategies.
