The Developing and Controversial Industry of Cow’s Milk Often described as “Nature’s Perfect Food”, milk is the foundation of life for all newborn mammals (Velten 10). Milk has played a central role in the American cultural and industrial landscape over the last century, binding farms with urban consumers, placing regulators at odds with producers, and inspiring a constant dance between producers, consolidators, nutritionists and end-users about how it is marketed and sold (Smith-Howard 368). As I have become older I have gained a new yet expected intolerance to lactose. I never used to have a problem when I was little but as food economies are changing, so are our products. By the 1950s, consumers demanded standards for dairy products while also developing a growing concern about health issues caused by dairy fats (Smith-Howard 368). This puts all of us at risk for certain diseases including osteoporosis and heart disease. The females of all mammal species can produce milk but cow milk dominates commercial production. Cow’s milk was initially intended only for baby cows. It is the primary source of nutrition for young mammals before they are able to digest other types of food. Humans are the only species that drink milk after infancy. Milk is the first food of mammals, providing all the necessary nutrients for survival and initial growth until weaning (Velten 10). It is only a small percentage of the world’s population that actually drinks milk. Most people prefer processed dairy products, such as butter, cheese and yogurt. Cow’s milk is probably the most controversial of foods. Breast milk excels as a source of nutrients for infants that promote infant health and development throughout the first year of life. The main carbohydrate in breast milk is lactose which is easily digested and enhances calcium absorption. The carbohydrate component of breastmilk also contains abundant oligosaccharides, which are present only in trace amounts in cow milk. These oligosaccharides help protect infants from infections by preventing the binding of pathogens to the intestinal cells. Americans always have some kind of “fad” diet and the majority of them desire to better health so Reidy plays at that to interject his opinion. He also mentions religion multiple times throughout the article and says “Real milk comes to us exactly as God designed it” (Reidy, “The Country that Banned Milk”). Religious people wouldn't want to change the ways of God, so Reidy words it so bluntly, almost saying “You are going against God if you drink pasteurized milk”; no Christian wants to go against their God. Religion plays one of the biggest roles in this article and Reidy visits it often. Reidy also uses bible quotes and relates them back to what is going on in the milk industry, making it seem like a much bigger deal than it is. According to him, the government is playing a much too large role in Americans milk purchases. He says “a government that would interfere with this right stepping beyond its natural limits” . He wants his readers to be able to see that a government that is oppressive to the extent that they would regulate perfectly good milk, should be stopped. He also asks his audience questions like “Doesn’t a man have a God-given right to the milk his herd produces?” in order to get a structured response from his audience. Reidy also offers the sentiment of the “Right to Milk” which gives off the impression that our rights are being infringed upon, which relates to every American. When somebody tries to take their rights away, Americans riot. They fight for what they believe in and Reidy hoped that if he got the entirety of America on his side, maybe they would fight for the legality of raw milk. Breastfeeding is the most protective, nutritional, and natural way to provide nourishment to infants. Human milk contains several nutrients including: vitamins, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and minerals. These nutrients are imperative for an infant’s developmental growth. Human milk also reduces the risk of developing morbidities, especially within premature infants. Premature infants, who are more prone to infection due their immune systems, benefit from human milk. Compared to artificial formulas, human milk provides antibodies and other beneficial nutrients to help with the development of the infant.
When you hear about milk, you may be expecting to hear about how it “builds strong bones” and has a “good source of calcium.” Only today, I’ll be discussing the ways milk harms us and why we should stop drinking it. Milk is very damaging to us all and we should definitely try our best to stop drinking it.
