Online communities? What are they? Well I’m not too sure. One thing I can tell you is that when I hear those words I usually think of chat rooms. I am sure you know that if you go online one of the things you can do is go into the chat rooms. In fact, one of the first things I did when I first go America Online was go into a chat room. I remember my friends telling me how much fun it was. I wondered what was so fun about it. f I wanted to talk to someone why wouldn’t it be more exciting to just pick up the phone and call some one or just get together with some of my friends. My friends would tell me that it was fun because you could talk to people all over the world. One of the first things you must do before being able to join a chat room is create a screen name. This is a process I think is really fun. There are billions of names you can choose; although you quite annoying when you finally pick a name only to find out that some one else has already picked that name. I have always found screen names interesting because I think they give you an inside look to the people you can not see. If you meet some one for the first time it might appeal to you to talk to them because you like their screen name. When I went online after picking my screen name, I then had an even harder task. Now I had to decide on which room I wanted to go into. It did not take me long to figure out that the regular chat rooms offered were not that interesting; at least not to me. I then went to the section of chat rooms that are made by people themselves. There are millions of categories. I think that there is a category out there for everyone. One thing that I did find weird was that if you went into a certain category once you got inside there was usually no one talking about that subject. What I did figure out was that even though people might not be talking about the subject they all usually have similar interest. So usually you can get along with them because you will know that they like at least one thing you do too.
...le have entered. Two couples, one with a small child. I find it curious how both of these husbands disappear as soon as the laundry is in the wash. I can see them out starting to wash their cars. Do they know how to run the washers? Or are they intimidated by a group of women together chatting? Even my new friends husband has found other things to do in the midst of this chatter. Women always have something to chat about with complete strangers. Well in the middle of all this simple chatting I’ve finished my chore.
Really chat (IRC) , news group, bulletin board, peer-to-peer net work , and social network sites. Moreover, theses online communities have promoted normalizing their interest in children and desensitizing them to the physical and psychological. The
There are some really favorable reasons for this strategy as well as some which are not so favorable. On the plus side, it is a fantastic way of screening a person want or does not want to correspond and possibly meet up with. You get a chance to talk with someone before actually doing a face to face meeting which is great so there are less feelings of rejection. You get to usually see pictures of the person you are corresponding with to see if a possible spark ignites between the two. Many individuals also do video chats to make certain that the person they are chatting with i...
Communities on the internet don’t get a sense of being connected with each other since they never have seen the other person face to face. On the other hand, traditional communities are created with the bonds and ties of people amongst the community. For example, all neighborhoods know who lives around them and help them whenever there is a need. Internet communities don’t make a good impact on someone’s life, because people in online communities are anonymous. The state of being there for someone physically when he or she needs help is lacking in the online community, which is the reason traditional types of communities build strong ties amongst their populace.
In the January 18th, 2012 New York Times article “The False Ideals of the Web”, Jaron Lanier attempts to take a very difficult issue – one that many view in terms of black or white – and find some middle ground. Unfortunately, what he ends up doing in the article is create an either/or situation, rather than find any middle ground. In the end we are left in the same situation that we started with.
The social media, today, has become one of the most effective ways to communicate. Emails and telephones are no longer the primary way of electronic communication. Consumers today prefer to ‘tweet’, ‘comment’, or even ‘chat’ with their friends, relatives and colleagues. WeChat is a mobile text and voice messaging service that was developed by Tencent, China in January 2011. It is used in the form of a mobile application. WeChat application is available on various mobile platforms such as Android, iTunes, Blackberry, Windows and Symbian. It supports languages such as English, Chinese, Indonesian, Korean, Japanese, Turkish, Malay, Portuguese, Thai, Hindi and Russian. An online community means different things to different people. For some, it conjures fuzzy, warm images of people chatting and helping each other. For others, it produces dark images of conspiracy, dissident and criminal behavior, sick perverts and invasion of privacy. At first, I was a little sketchy about joining a community. I wasn’t too fond of talking to strangers and posting my thoughts on certain subjects so hundreds of people can read them. I could be talking to someone, and everything they say could be a lie. I wouldn’t feel like I was having a real conversation, because someone can say he or she is something, when in reality he/she is a twisted and demented human being, who takes pleasure in harassing people online. Each day on the community was different. Some I enjoyed, and others made me despise the idea of ever having to return to the same site the next day.

Inside the majority of American households rest the unlimited territory of the internet. The unlimited and always advancing possibilities have unlocked powerful new tools in communication and socialization. Tools such as: long distance visual communication, international circulation of personal thoughts, and massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) have all led to a closer but more distant community of people. The positive side can attribute to the fact that the younger generation seems more in tune with their international counterparts. Youth have the ability to anonymously communicate with others through various message boards, mostly governed by one policy, freedom of speech. The anonymity of the internet has created a community where social outcasts mingle freely with others; a society where jocks can converse with geeks without fear of reprisal. This community releases people from the bounds of their own flesh. Yet, technological advances have pushed society into the next dimension of communication and socialization that seemingly override traditional and more personal vessels of communication.
Another way to meet people on Facebook is through instant messaging or IM. Instant messaging on Facebook is an exchange of texts but in real time. It’s a direct message usually private between a person or a group that instantly goes to the person or people you want to read them. This helps you stay connected to people because it allows you to directly write someone without everybody seeing it. It’s a private way to share your thoughts, ideas, and feelings with one another. Also you can from groups by adding people who might
Dating really changed in the few last years and meeting people online became not uncommon or just for young people only. But everyone now can use it to find their dates and meet new people.
Communicating online too much could hinder our ability to socialize effectively in the real life and interpersonal relationship. People in today’s generation love to communicate on the Internet. Due to the incredible convenience the Internet provides, people became socially dependent on it, therefore their time became preoccupied in front of the computer. Kids who grew up during the computer age show that they lack social skills. They would also feel uncomfortable and awkward when talking to people face to face. This is because they mostly isolate themselves in front of the computer chatting and meeting with people online. Due to lack of knowing other persons’ body cues, facial expression, miscommunication can occur. They are often unaware of the other member’s main idea and simply misinterpreting them.
While with the constant use of these social technologies, less people are communicating in person, this type of technology might be doing more harm than good because with the rise of websites such as Facebook, social networking may be on the verge of replacing traditional personal interactions for the next generation. Social networks were created for the sole purpose of helping individuals communicate. There are many other reasons that these technologies are used, but communication is still the number one. It is not only changing how we communicate, but how we interact with each other in daily life.
Privacy in Cyberspace Computers and the Internet have changed many things in the world today. People surf the web on a daily basis for information and entertainment. The Internet is making things like paying your bills from home a possibility. This was something that you had to leave the house to do, even if it was just dropping a check in the mail. Now you can pay your bills and buy your groceries, with everything being just a point and a click away.
Contrary to it, if we go toward online social spaces, "the online world can be far more muted"(Fisher 2003). There are social groups established online with their shared history. One can even not state that the person he/she is talking is the same one whose name is there or any other person. The mood and tone cannot be judged.
