Belgium is located in Western Europe. It’s located to the north of France, also bordering with Germany to the east, Luxembourg to the southeast, and the Netherlands to the north. A strip of land in the northwest lies on the North Sea. The country’s capital is Brussels, located a few miles north of the invisible language barrier that runs east to west. It began as a small hamlet in the 7th century, although officially founded in c. 979, and eventually grew to the city it is today (Wikipedia, “Brussels” 5). The entire country covers an area of 30,528 km². Despite its small size, Belgium has three distinct landscapes. Beginning in the northwest, on the North sea is an area of seacoast and flat coastal plains. Lower Belgium, as it’s called, only reaches to about 100 m above sea level. Central Belgium is between 100 and 200 m above sea level. It’s characterized by low and very fertile clay plateaus. Upper Belgium, more commonly known as the Ardennes region is in the southeast of Belgium. It’s height above sea level can range from 200 to over 500m. The area is known to be heavily forested and characterized by rolling hills. It’s a popular tourist destination with its beautiful valleys and beech forests, but because of its abundance of trees it’s also the least populated area, as can be seen in the population density map to the left. Upper Belgium begins below the Sambre and Meuse rivers (BFG 1). After this point, population sharply decreases. These are very difficult questions for me personally to answer because I live in the Pacific Northwest, and I have seen the beauty of the old growth forests first-hand.
In my generation, I am able to catch what is relatively the tail end of this slow extinction. And to be quite honest, I had not devoted a moment of thought to this phenomenon until I read Leopold’s passages. In fact, I am always the first one to compliment a new highway project that saves me five minutes of driving or even a tidy farmstead as I pass. Now, more than ever, my thoughts are in limbo. It was just last week when my dad pointed out an area off the highway that displayed miles of slowly rolling cornfields. His reaction was to the beauty of the countryside. Mine was to question his. I found myself thinking about all of the hard work that created that beauty, and then how much more beautiful it was fifty, a hundred, or even two centuries ago. Only the mind’s eye can create this beauty now, and that is exactly why Leopold’s concerns are validated.
England and the Austrian, Habsburg Empire were both influenced by many of the same pressures during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Each nation witnessed segments of their society demand religious freedom, and each struggled with the issue of Monarchial government and who possessed the right to the throne. These were the pressures faced by both nations and, though there were similarities between the issues, each nation took a very different approach to solving their problems. England would emerge from the 18th century capable of leading its citizens through a form of representative government; the Austrian, Habsburg Empire would find itself marginalized and absorbed by surrounding nations due to lack of unity and single purpose. England was successful at resolving its crises because, through compromise, it developed a stronger central government in the form of Constitutional Monarchy.
In 1877, a young man wrote an impassioned treatise to his colleagues at Oxford.“I contend that we are the finest race in the world and that the more of the world we inhabit the better it is for the human race,” wrote Cecil Rhodes, only 24 years old at the time. “Just fancy those parts that are at present inhabited by the most despicable specimens of human beings” he mused, “what an alteration there would be if they were brought under Anglo-Saxon influence.” Like many other Britons of his day, Rhodes was a staunch imperialist. The document cited, his famous “Confession of Faith,” was an unbridled expression of his belief in British racial superiority.

When Scotlandville first opened they were all segregated and the sports were on played against other black schools. Their biggest rival was in football and basketball which was McKinley High. The rivalry hasn’t changed over the years; it just has gotten more serious. The violence has also had an impact on the school now than it did back then. When Scotlandville is mentioned to others, they frown up because the violence is more known the programs offered.

Many times Africa is described as an unstable continent due to many inner conflicting problems. The majority of these problems were not self-inflicted, but came about due to outside influences, and the biggest impacts were imperialism and the colonization of African nations that took place between the nineteenth and twentieth century. Out of all of the African nations, the Belgian Congo was one of the poorest and unfairly treated nations. Yes, imperialism and colonization are some of the big reasons why Africa was broken and still is today, but the only reason why the Belgian Congo suffered the most out of all the other nations was mainly due to King Leopold II of Belgium. The extreme unawareness of King Leopold II on Belgian Congo caused it to collapse to detrimental levels. With little to no support systems in place, the Congo region never truly received the help to better its situation.
Since the beginning of humankind, the study of geography has captured the imagination of the people. In ancient times, geography books extolled tales of distant lands and dreamed of treasures. The ancient Greeks created the word "geography" from the roots "ge" for earth and "grapho" for "to write." These people experienced many adventures and needed a way to explain and communicate the differences between various lands. Today, researchers in the field of geography still focus on people and cultures (cultural geography), and the planet earth (physical geography).
Centuries ago, Earth was covered in forests. “…The whole country, full of woods and thickets...” (Bradford) was the average for settlers in the 1800s. They had grown accustomed to the full lush trees. Even in the 1900s there were the “…same beautiful trees…” (Fuller) and nature was a sight to see as people relished “passing through one of the fine, park-like woods, almost clear from underbrush and carpeted with thick grasses and flowers” (Fuller). However, as time has passed the ecosystem has changed. No longer are there “laurel, viburnum [a type of tree] and alder, great ferns…” (Carson).
Colonialism is a relationship of ascendency between an indigenous (or forcibly imported) majority and a minority of transcontinental invaders. Colonial rulers have the power to make the essential decisions that affect the lives of the colonised people, which are implemented in pursuit of interests defined in a distant metropolis. Through the ability of rejecting cultural compromises with the colonised population, the colonisers extend their supremacy and their ordained mandate to rule. Nonetheless, Colonial conquest is a term that undermines the complexity within colonialism. To fully understand this period of time, you need to recognize and accept the complication of the motives, methods, the events that occurred and the history involved.
Geographical concepts have been traced back to ancient days, geography is defining as the scientific study of the location of people and activity across earth and reasons for their distribution. It asks where and why things are where they are. Geographers organizes materials by the places they are located, thus being they have concluded that what happens in one place affects what happens in another place and can further affect conditions in the near future. Like any other subject geography has its own language and knowledge for better understanding of its concepts.
