The area which will be focused on in this piece is the county of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown (DLR) (CSO area code CTY 05) which is located in South County Dublin. The population of this area stands at 206,261 (47.8% male, 52.2% Female). People aged 0-14 stands at 37,536 (50.95% male, 40.05% Female). The elderly (65+) account for 29,872 of population (42.42% Male, 57.58% Female). The fact that there are significantly more women of the age 65+ would indicate that the health of males is worse than females in this area which then results in a lower life expectancy for men. People in the age group of 65+ make up 14.5% of the population in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown area, which is significantly higher than the Dublin and national averages which stand at 10.9% and 11.7% respectively. There are 21 target neighbourhoods within Dun Laoghaire Rathdown. These are areas in which rates of illness, unemployment and lower education levels are higher than the average of the rest of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown, Dublin and National averages. The number of people currently aged 15+ who are still within the education system (School, Third Level, Fetac courses etc.) stands at 32,149 (49% Male, 51% female). This figure represents that the student population makes up 15.6% of the population of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown (Southside Partnership, 2012). There is a range of different types of residential dwellings built in the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown area which include: houses (detached, semi-detached), bungalows, flats, apartments, bed-sit’ and caravan/mobile homes.
