Schools have recently found themselves in a debate over the dress code of students. Every year there are more and more schools requiring that their students wear a uniform instead of regular clothing. School officials are finding that allowing students to wear what they want is causing distractions as well as conflict. In addition to educators concerns some parents are finding that the cost of back to school clothing is becoming too expensive. All schools should require students to wear a uniform because they are less expensive and cause less conflict and distraction among students.
Social status plays an important role in the lives of young people. The type of clothing kids wear to school can sometimes determine their social status. Kids that come from families that do not have a lot of money often have to wear cheaper and less trendy clothing. Students often consider those who wear less trendy clothing to be poor and therefore lower class. When students wear uniforms, there is no way to tell who is wealthy and who is not. If students cannot tell who is wealthier everyone will feel equal. There will be a decrease in conflict among students if everyone in school feels equal to one another.

Educators take on the responsibility of providing a safe and equal place for students to learn these skills. During tough economic times, it is also important to make sure that all kids have the opportunity to succeed despite their family’s financial status. Ever wonder what it would look like to have all students wearing the same white polo shirt, black pants, and a district sweater walking in the hallway? Nowadays, public school and many districts are discussing the possibilities of enforcing the uniform policy. In most places, many private schools already require students to have their mandatory uniforms; however, there are only a few public schools adopting this mandatory school-uniform polices as one of their enrollment requirements. The reason why not all public schools participated was because people believe that they are violating the freedom of choice when enforcing this mandatory uniform policy; yet problems such as bullying and segregation, emerged in these schools. In society today, school-age children are under tremendous pressure to fit in with their peers and still perform well academically. I believe that school uniforms at pre-K through high school levels are an excellent way to help children succeed not only in school, but to prepare them for college and the “real world.” Three reasons why I believe school uniforms should be used in all schools is first, they are economic, next, they reduce distractions and finally, they help with social equality. To begin with, students should have the freedom to choose their own clothing. The schools systems should use a dress code, since this will not completely suppress one’s creativity. This plan gives students a chance to express their imagination and personality through their own clothing. Moreover, it teaches students to have their own judgment about what type of clothes are appropriate or inappropriate. What is equally important, a student’s religion. If students are religious, they should not have to break their traditions because of uniforms. For instance, some religions require students to wear special headdresses or specific articles of clothing. In other words, once uniforms are established, they cannot wear them.
