Schools have recently found themselves in a debate over the dress code of students. Every year there are more and more schools requiring that their students wear a uniform instead of regular clothing. School officials are finding that allowing students to wear what they want is causing distractions as well as conflict. In addition to educators concerns some parents are finding that the cost of back to school clothing is becoming too expensive. All schools should require students to wear a uniform because they are less expensive and cause less conflict and distraction among students.
Social status plays an important role in the lives of young people. The type of clothing kids wear to school can sometimes determine their social status. Kids that come from families that do not have a lot of money often have to wear cheaper and less trendy clothing. Students often consider those who wear less trendy clothing to be poor and therefore lower class. When students wear uniforms, there is no way to tell who is wealthy and who is not. If students cannot tell who is wealthier everyone will feel equal. There will be a decrease in conflict among students if everyone in school feels equal to one another.
Some people believe uniforms will not change social status in school because students will just find other ways to determine the status of others. Although some students may use other factors to determine social status, most students will not. The reason that most students will not use other criteria to determine social status is a simple one. Education is one of the most important things in a child’s life. Children go to school not only to learn things academically but also socially. Educators take on the responsibility of providing a safe and equal place for students to learn these skills. During tough economic times, it is also important to make sure that all kids have the opportunity to succeed despite their family’s financial status. Adults have to abide by certain rules and so should young people. Providing an equal place of learning for all students sometimes requires making strict rules for everyone. All schools should require students to wear a uniform because they are less expensive and cause less conflict and distraction among students.
