According to a famous baseball coach, “Baseball is not a contact sport, but contact with a ball, bat, or another player result’s in the most serious injuries” (Yenko). Jayne Yenko is correct, a point that needs emphasizing since so many people believe that injuries can happen anyway. “there are three types of baseball players: Those who make it happen, those who watch it happen and those who wonder what happens” (Tommy Lasorda). Baseball has been my favorite sport all my life, therefore I would like to learn more about the injuries in baseball. I really enjoy playing ball and want to be more educated about the facts about injuries in baseball. Baseball is considered a, “non-contact sport, but contact with baseball equipment and other players can result an injury” (Baseball). Therefore, “baseball is America’s sport and has been played longer than football, basketball or any other professional sport” (Baseball). However, baseball comes with some dangerous injuries. Each year out of “627,000 baseball injuries occurring each year, 117,000 of them occur in children age 5 to14 year olds, according to American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons and the University of North Carolina” (Baseball). According to Cooper University Hospital, “baseball has the highest rate of death among children of that age group, with three to four deaths per year” (Baseball). Tommy John surgery repairs and injured elbow ligament (Tommy). However, Tommy john Surgery is most commonly done on college and pro athletes, especially pitchers (Tommy). The surgery is names after former Los Angeles Dodger pitcher Tommy John (Tommy). Although in 1974, he underwent the first surgery of this type (Tommy). In spite of this the rate of ACL injury is almost equal through all levels of sports, from beginner, to recreational, to professional athletes. The most widely publicized incident of ACL damage has come from Theresa Edwards who was a top female athlete. She was a basketball player who went to the limit with sports. She went beyond her capability and her ligament couldn’t withstand the pressure and snapped. She is not the only but just one example of many who have suffered this same problem. As female athletes continue to become more competitive and aggressive, ACL damage continues to rise.
Baseballs require a coat of white leather stitched with red seams to cover the nine-inch circumference and 2.8 inch diameter. They are easy enough for a child to hold. Also, a baseball weighs only five ounces, which is like holding a deck of cards. Because a baseball is lighter and easier to hold, baseball players have better control of the ball. When I played little league baseball, I never witnessed any teammates suffer from being hit by a baseball. In that sense playing baseball does not create much of a risk of
The surgery that every pitcher has a nightmare of having is Tommy John. Tommy John surgery is one of the biggest surgeries in the sport of baseball. The most common players to have this surgery are pitchers. This surgery has made many players become more mentally and physically tougher and realize that you will never know when the last time you might be able to throw a ball. The first Tommy John Surgery happened in 1974 by an orthopedic surgeon Dr. Frank Jobe. Just this past season in 2014 there were 29 pitchers that had Tommy John Surgery (Tommy John surgery Wikipedia). Tommy John surgery is a renowned procedure that Dr. Jobe introduced to the health care professionals to reconstruct your ulnar collateral tendon
Hitting a baseball is not nearly as hard as it seems. The professional baseball players make hitting a baseball either look very easy or extremely hard. To begin the process the following items are needed: a bat, a baseball, and baseball gloves so that the hit baseball can be caught. Once all the items listed are collected there is one more thing needed, a place to play. Make sure that the teams are even that way it is a fair game.
Snap, crackle, pop. That is the horrific sound a baseball pitcher hears after throwing a pitch. The UCL tear used to haunt pitchers forever until 1974, when a man named Tommy John had a surgery to repair his UCL tendon and it was successful causing this surgery to transform baseball. Before his arrival, Tommy John Surgery was known as a “dead arm” injury (Tommy John Surgery). When doctors diagnose players with this injury, it’s no longer a total shock as today you are easily able to come back from this surgery as when 30 years ago, you couldn’t. In my paper I will talk about the basics of the injury, history of the UCL, ways to diagnose a UCL tear, and how to recover from Tommy John surgery along with some unbelievable facts about this distressing injury. This injury and surgery has revolutionized baseball and prolonged the careers of many great players in the MLB.
Baseball is considered America’s past time. Legends like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jackie Robinson, and many more have come and gone. Throughout baseball’s history certain players have excelled more than others, and like any sport they were successful by exploiting their strengths. It isn’t the rules, uniforms, stadiums, and fan base that make baseball a beautiful sport; it’s the players. Anyone competing, whether it is at a professional level or not, has their own unique mechanics that allows them to perform the best they can. No pitcher throws the ball the same way as another and no batter hits the ball the same way as another. Every baseball player has a routine in everything they do that makes them special. It has been said that hitting a baseball is the hardest task in all of sports. To accomplish that task, all factors come in to play; the type of pitch being thrown, the release point of the pitch, the break of the ball, etc. All those factors occur before the batter’s swing is fully initiated. As mentioned earlier, no batter swings the same way as another however, the mechanics of a swing is a different thing entirely. The mechanics of one’s swing begins when a batter enters the box and ends when a batter exits, what happens in between is up to the batter. By perfecting a batter’s mechanics while in the box, their chances of making contact increase greatly.
Most people don’t think of baseball as a high risk injury sport. Unlike football, hockey or boxing, baseball seems tame in comparison. While it’s true that baseball is not a high contact sport, a variety of injuries can occur to the players in virtually every part of the players body but most notably in the shoulder; some of these injuries can be career ending.
Upon further investigation, baseball is more than just “One, two, three strikes you’re out,”there is a whole world of physics interacting and exerting itself upon the game, unseen to the human eye. So next time one sees a batter hit a home run off a knuckle ball at Coors Field in Denver, one will have a great appreciation for the physics of the game that came into play within that play.
When an athlete catches the sound of their knee crack and pop, they better prepare themselves for a long journey. The Center for Injury and Policy (CIRP), from Science Daily, reports that, “Knees are the most accident prone part of the body in high school athletes.” Knee injuries are very common; in fact, they are responsible for 45% of the injuries that occur in high school athletics across America. Knee injuries are well known to not just those in the medical field, but also to athletes. Injuries to the knee are caused by many factors, and what happens after the injury has taken place is what’s most concerning (Science Daily).
Baseball is known as America’s national pastime, and has been played for over 100 years. Baseball can be a lot of fun, but is also extremely challenging to play, especially trying to hit a 90 mile per hour fastball. I am a very devoted baseball player myself, and over the years I have learned numerous key things about the game. Baseball does not only require physical strength to hit and throw the ball, but it also requires a great mindset, such as, mental preparedness, concentration, and a positive attitude.
Baseball players and fans call it Tommy John surgery, after the pitcher who was the first to have the surgery 29 years ago. By any designation, it is one of the major advancements in sports medicine in the last quarter century. Technically it is a ulnar collateral ligament replacements procedure.
An Athletic Trainer working at the high school level gets to enjoy a variety of sports and with different sports comes different injuries. With football, the injuries an Athletic Trainer has to tend to are often more on the severe end of the scale. It is not uncommon to see a concussion (see Figure 2) or a torn ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament in the knee) in a football game compared to a softball game where a concussion or an ACL tear (see Figure 1) is less likely to occur. But in a softball game in comparison to a volleyball game, it is more likely to see a black eye or even just a very painful bruise. The more contact in the sport, the more injuries the Athletic Trainer gets to see and try to
Many people believe that hitting is where to begin, according to an old coach, "The main part of baseball that brings people in to the game is hitting. Some have seen professionals do it on TV and others have seen it in person. But as for hitting, it is the major part of baseball for many players" ("Basic"). Another coach agrees going as far as saying, "A successful player must be able to hit the ball" ("Basic"). Hitting is not just a part of the game; hitting is the game. Hitting is the main and most important part of the game of baseball. During the sport of baseball, hitting is what determines who will win the game and who will lose. A great hitting team can have off days. In baseball everyone has good and bad days. As far as hitting, it is what determines the end results.
...sh someone down while kicking the soccer ball; elbow you on the face while playing basketball, getting hit by a baseball/softball, getting tackled by another football player. These are the most common injuries in sports.
The importance of proper pitching mechanics in baseball is crucial for performance improvement and injury prevention of the pitcher in the sport. Improper pitching mechanics in baseball can result in excessive stress to the joints, thus increasing the risk of injury to the pitcher. The biomechanics of baseball pitching has several different elements that could be examined to increase the effectiveness of the pitch and reduce the occurrence of injury in the sport. During the baseball pitch, there are important phases that are involved in the pitching motion. Each of these phases has a relevant biomechanical aspect that is important to the pitching skill to ensure efficiency and help reduce the risk of serious injury. Pitching effectiveness can
