Recommended: how are gender roles shaped by the media
In today's society, our media is the source through which many people receive messages or information. Music provides messages of the artist's past life experiences such as hardships and points of success. TV conveys ideas of the latest trends and expectations for the “ideal life”. Movies portray the heroic role men should have at all times while making women always seem like the fragile powerless character. In other words, media is the filter through which living standards or guidelines are portrayed to people. However, these standards or guidelines are sometimes not as accurately portrayed as one would think and in some cases are even twisted. As a result, some of the content portrayed in the media can at times emotionally damage men and women. Analyzing what specifically causes this emotional damage can perhaps provide us with a better understanding on ways to properly filter media.
A major source of media that has the potential to emotionally damage women is music, especially in rap. Today's popular artists like Lil Wayne, Eminem, Wiz Khalifa and many others ten...
The effects of objectifying women in music videos are entirely negative. Women grow up with the idea that they should always seek to attain a men’s attention. Hip-hop music videos do not represent females as the human beings that they really are. This creates an inequality o...
Media is an important component of American culture, from the music people listen to the movies they watch, the media people consume can and does consistently affect their views of the world, other people, and themselves. Women can be hurt by the media, and closing in even more, women of color. Representation in media is still quite low, despite how far America has come in terms of equality. This leaves the levels of exposure to races other than white relatively low and when there is representation of other ethnicities, they are often caricatures of demeaning stereotypes. No matter if someone identifies as European American or as another ethnic identity, the European American ideals and norms affect everyone who is exposed to them (Iijima-Hall 1995:9). Consistent exposure to this style of media can be damaging to self-images of women of color and their personal perceptions of beauty, though it often manifests in different ways among different ethnic identities.
Imagine what the world would be like if when people came home from school or work, they were not able to sit in front of their television and watch their favorite shows. This would be hard to think about considering that not a day goes by that people don’t use some form of media. Media is used to obtain information and watch entertainment. There are many forms of this, and some include newspapers, the Internet, television, and so much more. While there are obviously many great benefits to the growth of media, there are some undeniable and harsh downsides. “In a study on fifth graders, 10 year old girls and boys told researchers they were dissatisfied with their own bodies after watching a music video by Britney Spears or a clip from the TV show “Friends”" (Sanders). This is only one of the many disturbing statistics about the effects that media can have on people. An extensive amount of research and studies have been done over this topic, and it is very evident that media influence has greatly affected society and its peoples’ behaviors in a negative way.
Far too often, we are influenced mentally and socially by Media. The new millennium has accepted all sources of media has almost more prudent source of information. As defined by The Merriam Webster Dictionary , Media is “a medium of cultivation, conveyance, or expression (Smiler).” For the purposes of this essay, I will condense the broad spectrum of media and focus specifically on these forms : print media, television , movies, and the internet. Within the Written composition, A trifling media written by Shakira Smiler, she carefully examines piece by piece why she believes not only men are trifling but as well how media has influenced why it's acceptable. Within her exposition, she speaks to infidelity , immaturity, and specifically, seeing
In general, Media can be defined as a broad range of mass communication which includes internet, television, radio, and other mediums that have plausible influences to the audience. Nowadays, as the urbanization takes place; the consumption of mass media has become apparent as current trends. Certainly, media plays a profound role in shaping our perspective, attitude, and idea as we are exposed to the media very significantly in variety of forms. According to the “Miss Representation”, American teenager in average are exposed to media approximately about 10 hours and 45 minutes per day. Thus, it is often the role of the media to shape our perception and emphasized the expectations of societal norms in the context of representation. Based on Oxford dictionaries representation is “the description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way or as being of a certain nature”. Briefly, the paper will discusses “I Luh Ya Papi” a music video by Jennifer Lopez to further exemplify the gender norms or gender binaries in society, the effects of music video on gendered violence, portrayal of heterosexism in media, cultural and racial stereotypes depiction, and the consequences of the male patriarchal system.
Have you ever thought about what the media does to women? The film “Miss Representation” was a documentary about how the media misrepresent woman on television, magazines, and music. Every teenager spends most of their time with a consumption of Media, and it has a great influence on them. Indeed, media always shows the standard of a woman on how the media itself likes every woman would look like. Although, there are many women who are successful they still focus on what they see physically and they will never stop criticizing a woman in every way. Therefore, men and boys see a woman as inferior to them and as an object that they could just use all the time. While, woman, and girls tend to follow the social norm so they could fit it. Media is the reason on how this gender representation started, and they are also the key on how it could be changed. The director of the film “Miss Representation” effectively convinces the audiences that media plays a high role in presenting women differently; by narrating her own experience, showing woman 's role in society, and revealing the truth on gender issues.
In every home there sits an unknown intruder lurking around just waiting to contaminate the minds of young women. The intruder is square in shape and ranges in sizes 10 to 73 inches. This meddlesome squatter I speak of is non-other than your television box. The average adolescent in the United States watches about 20,000 television commercials a year (Gentile & Walsh, 1999). With that being said we never stop to realize just how much time we spend or how the viewed content is affecting us. Let’s face it televisions are everywhere; in our homes, in the stores and sports bars. Fact of the matter is television is the most popular form of mass media and that’s because it has the greatest mass appeal, acceptance and is convenience.
But boys and men are not the only problems. Many women also do not support other women, and instead will tear others down and choose to support patriarchal ideals. Women in the media are not displayed as human beings, they are displayed as perfect, unachievable “cartoons” and are the basis of judgement, as explained by Paul Haggis, a producer, director, and screenwriter. Women are constantly dehumanized and demoralized by the media, but whenever a woman is represented as a “real person,” the impact on women and girls is astounding. People need to see themselves represented, and that just doesn’t happen in the media as it should. Women are rarely the protagonist of movies or TV shows, and when they are, they’re usually looking for love and to get married; women shown in positions of power or leadership are scarce, and inevitably canceled, and women with real accomplishments are never reported
“People learn more from media than any other single source of information” (Missrepresentation). This quote exemplifies how society learns and creates their standards about people, places, and things. All sources and mediums of media impact billions of lives every day. The media holds this power over society and it’s time to change that; especially when it comes to the media’s view of women. Women are constantly being misrepresented. This misrepresentation of women in the media is negatively impacting America by corrupting both the youth and adults. This is occurring because of the hyper-sexualization of women, wrongly portraying women in leadership positions, and creating stereotypes of women in movies and television.
The media, including television programming, cartoons, film, the news, as well as literature and magazines, is a very powerful and pervasive medium for expression. It can reach a large number of people and convey ideas, cultural norms, stereotypic roles, power relationships, ethics, and values. Through these messages, the mass media may have a strong influence on individual behavior, views, and values, as well as in shaping national character and culture. Although there is a great potential for the media to have a positive and affirming effect on the public and society at large, there may be important negative consequences when the messages conveyed are harmful, destructive, or violent.
Women have consistently been perceived as second-class citizens. Even now, in times when a social conscience is present in most individuals, in an era where an atmosphere of gender equality 'supposedly' exists, it is blatantly apparent that the objectification and marginalization of women is still a major social issue. In reality, progression in terms of reducing female exploitation has been stagnant at best. Not only is the degradation of women a major problem that to date has not been eradicated, but it is actually being endorsed by some music celebrities. There are a growing number of people who purchase rap albums that support the fallacy that women are mere objects and should be treated as such. As the popularity of rap continues to climb at unprecedented rates, so too does its influence on the perception of women. In the vast majority of hip-hop songs, the depiction of women as sexual objects, the extreme violence directed towards them and the overall negative influence these lyrics have on the average adolescent's perception of women make rap the absolute epitome of female exploitation.
Although mass media plays a very important role in creating entertainment and public awareness, it also shapes a younger man mind by creating a false representation on how these men should appear, act and behave in society. The media does not wa...
Women are constantly being objectified in media. Studies have shown a link between objectification and sexualization of women in media and an increase in violence against the female gender. This sexual objectification has been shown to have a negative impact on women.
The mass media has played a key role in shaping people’s lives. The modern society’s use of mass media including TV, radio, newspaper, as well as print media has largely influenced people’s ideas regarding themselves and the society at large. This is evident from their behavior towards themselves and their community as well as their treatment of the environment. While some experts believe that the media is to blame for most of the negative behavioral traits among the active members of society, the majority agree that the media makes people understand and develop a positive sense of association with their society within which they live, making it easy for them to identify and get their role in it.
Media technologies are becoming an important aspect of today’s society. Each and every day, people interact with media of many different forms. Media is commonly defined as being a channel of communication. Radio, newspapers, and television are all examples of media. It is impossible to assume that media is made up of completely unbiased information and that the media companies do not impose their own control upon the information being supplied to media users. Since many people use media very frequently, it is obvious to assume that it has affects on people. According to the text book Media Now, "media effects are changes in knowledge, attitude, or behavior that result from exposure to the mass media," (386). This leaves us with many unanswered questions about media and its influences. This paper will look at how the effects of media are determined and explore the main affects on today’s society - violence, prejudice, and sexual behavior.
