Whether we realize it or not, the way that we communicate with others has been a total of all that we have learned and the way that we perceive it. People's cultural upbringing conjures up different images, attitudes, and behaviors. Cultural beliefs, values, norms, and practices all influence communication. This analysis will describe examples of how culture’s can influence communication styles and patterns.
Of all the world's living cultures, Greece's is among the most ancient with 98 percent of its population sharing an ethnic identity, as well as a strong Greek Orthodox religious tradition. Cultural beliefs are the commonly held norms and moral standards of a culture, the standards of right and wrong that set expectations for behavior. These beliefs are usually rooted in the culture's symbolic inheritance and include the roles that are appropriate for particular persons. (Pearson Prentice Hall, 2010) Greece’s rich culture has developed through thousands of years. The earliest known belief in the “matiasma” also known as “the evil eye” began in Greece. In Greek theology, the evil eye is considered harmful for the one whose envy inflicts it on others as well as for the sufferer. “In addition to the use of evil eye amulets, the Greeks carry incense or the cross as protection against the evil eye.” (Jewish Gift Place, 2014) It is rather interesting that the concept of the evil eye still has such a powerful influence in modern life, jewelry design and even pop culture. Religion is essential to life in Greece and plays a role in the respect that the people have for hierarchy and their view of the family as a single unit of strength. In conclusion in Greek theology, the evil eye is considered harmful, in Mexico machismo is still an ongoing problem, in Rwandan culture it is a norm for men to hold hands in public without necessarily being deemed homosexual and in Chinese culture it is taboo to hug a member of the opposite sex. This analysis described a few examples of how culture’s can influence communication styles and pattern beginning from the communities stand point all the way down to the individual. We should embrace diversity and strive to understand each other without losing our cultures all for hope of a more harmonious world.
Geert Hofstede has developed a framework for cross-cultural communication to understand the effect of culture on values and behaviour of the people. The differences across cultures was measured and compared using six dimensions: Power distance, Individualism, Uncertainty avoidance, Masculinity vs Feminity, Long term vs short term orientation and Indulgence vs Restraint.

Communication pattern is the structures in which communication flows in an organization. There are different kinds of communication pattern and assumption of cultural difference. The majority of people living in this United State has a different communication pattern which they are used to. But the challenges in this communication difference is that miscommunication will likely occur because there is a significant cultural difference between the communicators. The most important aspect of this communication pattern is the ability to understand another person’s pattern. For me, I am identified with African American culture. Cultural context affects communication greatly because cultures in one country differ from cultures in another country. There are two kinds of cultural context; high-context culture and low-context culture. “In a high-context culture people rely less on the explicit content of the message and more on the context of the nonverbal actions and environmental setting to convey meaning” (Bov`ee pg 11). In a simpler way this means that high-context cultures focus on nonverbal cues and are very affectionate versus low-context cultures focus on verbal cues. “In a low-context culture people rely more on the explicit content of the message and less on circumstances and cues to convey meaning” (Bov`ee pg 11).
As culture is being learned and transmitted from one generation to the next, there is the question as to how it is being learned? And does it change? Banking on the simplified definition of (Samovar, Porter, & McDaniel, 2012) culture is learned through communication. This entails social interactions among people with common understanding of symbols, shared values and beliefs, and rules as a product of reciprocal information processing (Lustig, 2006).

Communication style can be defined as a person’s characteristic way of speaking. Every different culture around the world all have their own unique twists on how they communicate in comparison to other cultures. After the completion of an interview with Nabil Haddad, a retired High School science teacher from Lebanon, and the Arabic culture, it was analyzed that there are many similarities and differences between the communication styles between the Arabic culture throughout the middle east, and ours in the United States. After completing analysis of the interview, it was deduced that these two cultures have some major differences in communication style. Between the two cultures, Arabic and American, the major differences can be seen within three major aspects of communication style; the belief of talk and its value, politeness, and presentation of self.
When individuals or groups from different cultures communicate, this process is called intercultural communication. The transaction process of listening and responding to people from different cultural backgrounds can be challenging. The greater the difference in culture between two people, the greater the potential of misunderstanding and mistrust. Misunderstanding and miscommunication occur between people from different cultures because of different coding rules and cultural norms, which play a major role in shaping the patterns of interaction (Jandt, 2012).
Many people who go to visit or work in another country suffer some misunderstanding from the local people, because they have a different culture. Different culture will cause disparity points of view about almost everything. In the article, Intercultural Communication Stumbling Blocks by Laray M. Barna, there are five stumbling blocks mentioned that are seen in a cross-culture communication. These blocks are: language, nonverbal signs and symbols, preconceptions and stereotypes, the tendency to evaluate and high anxiety. Barna wants to use these stumbling blocks to show the common blockades between different cultures. Effective communication with people of difference cultures can be especially challenging. The way people interpret the world can be strikingly different between cultures. Intercultural communication occurs when a member from one culture produces a message that is absorbed by a member of another culture. How that message is understood by the communicating party is a vital part in intercultural communication. For example, in Cambodia it would be considered rude to discuss business in a social setting (Language, culture, customs and etiquette, n.d.). However, in the United States this is a common practice and is almost an encouraged event. Another important factor and consideration in intercultural communication is the importance of understanding cultures, values, history and beliefs. For instance, in Cambodia, if you deliver a present that is wrapped in white paper, this is considered to represent mourning. This is one of the many reasons why it is important to assimilate into a culture and be mindful of communication between cultures (Language, culture, customs and etiquette, n.d.).
Everything we do in our life involves communication because it is a way for a sender to send message to the receiver by verbal and non-verbal communication. However, in some parts of the world messages that are delivered sometimes are not received in a way it is supposed to. A way to solve this is by using competent communicator and intercultural communication because it makes it easier for people from other cultures to communicate in general. On the other hand, there are also some problems faced because different cultures have different ways to express their way of communication. By understanding these types of communication and by defining them may solve this dilemma. In addition to that, there are also types of communication to consider that are commonly used, which is Proxemics, Gestures and body language.

The way people communicate varies widely between, and even within, cultures. One aspect of communication style is language usage. Language has always been perceived as a link between people but it can also constitute a barrier. Across cultures, some words and phrases are used in different ways. For example, even in countries that share the English language, the meaning of "yes" varies from "maybe, I'll consider it" to "definitely so," with many shades in between . Furthermore, communication between cultures which do not share the same language is considerably more difficult . Each culture, has its distinct syntax, expressions and structure which causes confusion in intercultural communication. For example , in Asian countries the word “no” is rarely used, so that “yea” can mean “no” or “perhaps”. Therefore, an American traveling to Japan might be considered impolite if he ignores this rule. Furthermore, individuals who are not comfortable with a certain language may not be taken seriously. Such is the case in the classroom, where a student who has a perfect knowledge of the subject in question may have difficulty expressing his idea due to his inability to write properly and therefore he would not receive the grade he truly deserves.
