Critical Thinking Case Study Chris had just been promoted as an Executive Assistant for Pat the CEO, Chief Executive Officer, of Faith Community Hospital. Pat had given Chris her very first assignment on her first day of work as an executive assistant and that was to gather information so that Pat can present the issues to the board of directors. This case examines the multiple duties that the President and CEO of Midvale Community Hospital, Terry Blaze, participated in throughout the day to ensure that the hospital is running effectively. Throughout the day, Blaze attends numerous meetings, which are directed towards improvements, changes, or concerns that will overall affect the hospital. During several of them, he is required to make final decisions however, he often directs other personnel to make that final judgment call. It was evident that Blaze wore many hats as the President and CEO of the hospital, which made it evident that his time was stretched thin. This could result in tasks going unfinished or completed incorrectly. From what I learned in class, critical thinking is the concept of accepting that there are other people and cultures in this world that may have different opinions. It is being able to react rationally to these different opinions.
Healthcare is a dynamic, ever-changing environment. The complex circumstances around daily conversations that encompass life-threatening decisions are critical. In order to deliver high quality care, individuals must be able to communicate effectively. In the perfect world of communication, everyone receives the exact same information and is able to respond the exact same way. Unfortunately, communication breakdown is a prevalent issue among hospitals. On any given day of the hospital arena, multiple interactions take place. Some of the dialogue is planned, and some is not. While hospital departments are living in different silos within the same organization, the cultures may vary among the employees. Hospital leadership fosters the importance of collaboration within the organization and depends on the employees to ultimately drive the process. In order to overcome communication barriers in the workplace, conversations must occur. Engaging in daily face-to-face meetings with employees increases positive work culture, morale and overall productivity.
When trying to define critical thinking you might run into some challenges along the way. Critical thinking is a widely used yet vague term that is practiced by different people in a variety of locations throughout the world. Jankowski promoting transparency includes accepting and publishing the results of many DHS surveys. She convinced her staff to accept the surveyors because they identify problems that need to be fixed that would usually be overlooked or ignored. In order to truly be critical thinkers, we must reach stage six: master thinker. Although it is stated that philosophers are unsure that we as humans are capable of becoming master thinkers, due to our deep social conditioning. I believe that while it may not be possible for the vast majority of humanity to become level six critical thinkers, I do believe it is possible for the fittest of our society to become true critical thinkers.
While the semester is over and the deadline has expired, I thought I would write this to express my true intended thoughts.
Critical thinking is a process of applying various skills to analyze information. Critical thinking uses rationality to distinguish between emotion and fact. This paper will discuss the definition of critical thinking, and the skills it takes to think critically. It will also provide an example of critical thinking applied to my current working environment. Finally this paper will discuss the importance and benefits of critical thinking in the decision-making processes.
With regard to the healthcare organization, it is essential to develop a strategic plan and a clear vision so that the patient focused care will be at par with the organizational process that is conducted operationally and on a daily basis. SSM Health Care has its call letters for meetings standardized at all their sites as part of its protocol. Its values and missions are attached to its call letter for meetings as constant reminders for their staff. Indirectly, this approach helps in translating our vision on how people should behave at SSM Health Care.
