If one is considering cosmetic surgery I suggest reconsidering. Research shows cosmetic surgery can be a risky and costly procedure. Society is pressuring people to look more attractive. Media shows actors to be flawless and the public feels that one should be compared to these actors. Cosmetic surgery is becoming more popular is today’s culture. People are turning to cosmetic surgery for many reasons, some of them are not healthy.
Why do people go to such dangerous measures to look more attractive? People may be getting cosmetic surgery because the media makes a person feel unattractive. The media shows us these beauty queens that we feel like we have to live up to and compare ourselves to. As a society, it seems that we see the attractive people on TV or in movies and we think that we should be like them. Everyone likes them; maybe we will become more liked if we look like them. Right? TV advertises many products to make a person good-looking, from diet pills to the newest brand of facial cream. No matter what a person looks like, it will not change that person’s identity. Many people walk around in shame because of one’s looks, and TV shows record a person going through the surgery and gaining self-esteem. Everything turns out perfectly for these people on the TV shows. If it works for the people on TV, why wouldn’t it work for everyone else? “Critics say the show minimizes the risks of plastic surgeries while exaggerating what can be achieved . . . makeover shows also usually refrain from taping patients right after surgery.” (CQR, 4). This will show viewers that going through the surgery is not so bad, and these people are so happy after the procedure. It makes people think that it is like a fairy tale. People do not know ...

The biology of beauty is judging people on whether they are either ugly or beautiful, attractive or unattractive. When people are judging by their looks and others by the way you dress. People all over the world look at magazines saying that I wish I was this model or I should try this for my body. I wonder if this product will work for my body or skin. They say that when they are looking in the magazines and other papers that have make up or they just buy a whole bunch of products. If the products don’t work they will just spend amount of money just to be thrown in the trash but some people keep it just in case they need it again. Famous people like actors, artists, and models get injections in their faces or tell the doctors to remove any type of fat from their body just to be in a movie or show they want to look skinny and pretty in.

In addition to that, Teen Magazine published in 2003 an article saying that children from age 6-12 have been on a diet and are now considering plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery sends the message that the prejudices some people have about appearance are valid, which is very wrong.
The media has had an increasingly destructive effect on young people who are becoming worryingly obsessed with their body image. The media is saturated in sexual imagery in which young people have to face every day. The sheer volume of sexual imagery in the media today has resulted in the vast majority of young people to become hooked on looking as near to perfection everyday by using the latest products and buying the latest fashions. This used to be enough but lately the next step to achieving perfection is cosmetic surgery. Everyone wants to look attractive, especially teenagers who are not only put under massive strain to succeed but to look beautiful and climb the ranks of the social ladder, and it seems that the only way to achieve the much desired beauty is to turn to drastic measures.
In society today, people look at beauty as a tall, skinny model or a tan, muscular man. It has brain washed the world to believe that in order to look beautiful, they must look like the images that are seen in the media. Today’s celebrities who are famous for their appearance also encourage the belief that thin is beautiful. These images are all over the media right now and have been for many years. With all of these images that are seen everywhere, a person feels obligated to look just like the people of Hollywood so they turn to cosmetic and/or weight loss surgery. Although cosmetic surgery can improve one’s self-image, it can also have a lot of disadvantages which can lead to many risks, even death.

Most of us don't like some aspect of our appearance, whether it's sagging eyes or excess weight in particular areas, to name a few complaints. Flipping through the pages of Vogue's latest edition, 23 year-old Susan seems quite upset. She struggles with the thought of lacking the perfect body and delicate features in order to be considered attractive. Surprisingly, Susan is not alone in this kind of an internal struggle. In contemporary society, every other woman aspires to have the lips of Angelina Jolie and the perfect jaw line of Keira Knightley. Society today looks down upon individuals that do not fit in, whether in terms of body shape or facial attractiveness. This forces them to consider the option of 'ordering beauty.' Since cosmetic surgery is no longer a social taboo in America given its widespread popularity, more people are promoting it which ultimately affects the rest of the world due to the unwavering influence of American culture. Cosmetic surgery should be deterred in the US because it promotes the idea of valuing appearance over ability, gives rise to unrealistic expectations, and brings with it high cost to society.

Cosmetic Surgery is a great discovery that has been around for many centuries. “The history of plastic surgery origins in the early 800 B.C. when surgeons in India restored noses to persons who had them taken off as a form of punishment.” (History of Cosmetic Surgery, 2008) Many people have used over the years cosmetic and reconstructive surgery to enhance their physical appearance weather it be for health problems associated with birth defect or problems that they have developed over the years or to even alter physical appearances for instance nose jobs and tummy tucks. There are numerous types of cosmetic surgery that can be done today in the United States, over the year’s surgeons techniques have improved dramatically. There are a number of pro’s and con’s that go along with cosmetic surgery, such as the amount of recovery time and the initial cost of surgery. Statistics also show that cosmetic surgery has grown so rapidly over the years it is phenomenal people who receive cosmetic surgery goes up by the millions every year. While there can be many related health risks due to cosmetic sugary, many times cosmetic surgery is necessary and its is made more affordable than thought to be.
